Default Why do I try?

Here's a little vent session... HOW MANY MORE TIMES AM I GOING TO GET SCREWED OVER!!!!!

OK...story time

I spent the better part of yesterday and today doing my first engine teardown ever (17 here, not had much time to practice, haha). I followed clarks garage to the T on how to do everything...got through it all, didn't break a single stud, didn't lose a single nut or bolt, everything went smoothly and only took about 9 hours total (not horrible for a first time), only to find this \/\/\/...somebody just shoot me now...so how bad is it guys? Should i scrap the engine, or can i get this fixed?:bangh ead:

Find a new engine to put in it. it's not tough... or bore it out a bit...

Can you feel the scratches? Is that the only cylinder that has the problem?

I have an extra engine, no idea what condition it's in, but i don't live at home, where the cars are, i live in a dorm in PA, so i don't have enough time to do a full engine swap, and yes the scratches are very deep, it feels like train tracks if i run my finger around the cylinder, and i can't tell if that's the only cylinder that has troubles because that's the only one i can see, i just got down the having the head off, didn't get any further. I'd like to bore it out, but i don't know how much that would cost (highschool student here...), so could anybody give me some numbers on boring this thing?

Thanks in advance
Ethan

Its very expensive to do it correctly due to the process Porsche uses with these blocks, not every machince shop can do it. your most cost effective solution would be just tear down your extra engine, and build a good one between the two.

Well,

If you can get the head off then you can turn the engine over with a 24mm socket and breaker bar.

I am in the same boat as you -- except all 4 holes have scratches. I am trying to figure out if its worth it to resleeve, bore or just get a running shortblock.

Good Luck

Best to throw in a used engine. Boring gets expensive and timely very quick.

if you guys take a good look at the pistons that are open you can see that they're full of crap, like seeds and grass...that was there when i opened this thing up...not good. and the po tried to start it before i bought it, smart dude...smart.

Though boring the block can be a little expense, nothing is more expensive than having to use larger pistons. I think you can get away with overbore rings and still be ok.\

I would get those bores mic'd (micrometered). I had some deep scratches in my #3 on my NA also and the micrometer only said that a honing was necessary. Worse case scenario is that you have to bore and get slightly larger rings for all bores.

I would use the other block and make one good engine, i looked into having the block sent out to have a scored cylinder repaired, 928performance i think. and it was minimum $900 if it didnt have to be enlarged, more likely $1200-$1500 I "think". they will the scores, then bore it to the original size, and do all the fancy stuff needed, this was when i was looking at a 951 project and it might have been worth it.

does your head look like this? white valves are leaking, and in my case, all 4 exhaust valves were bent. whats the history fromt he PO? belt failure?

1-2-3-4, there you go, they're not as bad as yours, but yeah...i have no info from the P.O. he didn't tell me if the belt broke, he said that it was wrecked, then repaired, but never finished being reassembled, so they parked it, then it developed a miss (what a load of bull$#!^). aye caramba! I need some good luck to come my way sooner or later!

probably just leaking somewhat, if you are having the head decked and valve grind, it will fix that right up
