After a short break to replace:
Cam Tensioner Pads
Plugs
Plug Wires (might have been original? yikes)
Powder coated the valve cover...(nice).
I got it all back together and started it up to take
it for a nice test ride. Ran sweet......nice and smooth.
Then.....All of a sudden, I could smell gas.....Alot of gas....aww...cr.p!!!
So....I checked the fuel lines (because I'd been fooling
around in that area), but there was no leak there.
Then I looked under the car. It was leaking like a sieve
from around the fuel filter....actually, it's one of the fuel
lines that is connected to the filter. Funny thing is, it
wasn't doing this at all before I started all the work
above. Not one drop.
So...my question is....What on earth would cause it to just
start doing that? It was only sitting for about a week.
Any ideas? And any tips on replacing the lines back there
around the fuel filter? And......Given that the car is 20 years
old, should I just consider replacing ALL of the rubber fuel
lines?
Thanks in advance......where's my beer? Ahh...There it is.......

Never mind how old it is, if you're bleeding fuel you should definitely replace as many lines as you can. Rennbay has a fuel line kit and it's well worth replacing the fuel filter while you're in there.
I don't know what the cause was ... these things happen.

I HATE when stuff like that happens. Just happened to me Friday! I'm pulling onto the freeway for the 3 hour drive home when I hear "clunk", feel what seems like I've run over something, look in the rearview, and I see a couple pieces of black something bouncing around behind me. Not one minute later I get into the boost a bit, and the engine dies.
I pull over, and can't find anything wrong under the hood or the car.
Engine then starts back up, seems to run just fine, but a few minutes later, I try to use some boost again.... engine dies again.
I look even more meticulously to find my problem, and fail.
Well, after a couple more minutes the engine once again starts and seems fine, and I finally decide I have a boost leak and hitting the throttle drowns my plugs. So I drive home being ultra careful to stay out of the boost (I was driving with an expired license anyway LOL... got it renewed today), and I make it just fine.
Saturday, I found a loose clamp between the intercooler and intake. The black stuff I had seen bouncing musta just been some truck retread that I had run over. It's the coincidence that that happened the same time as my other, unrelated issue is what's maddening!

Yeah...I was pretty PO'd when it happened.....My wife walked over and
said "What's wrong with it now?". That was definitely not the right
thing to say.....hahahahahaha!
Oh well....new fuel lines and fuel filter on the way. Another week
off the road.

On the NA there is a J-line from the filter output to the fuel line. Mine was rotted away and when I replaced the fuel filter the same thing happened. Bring your wallet.

Personally, all I did was jack the car up, remove the passenger rear tire, and lean in and do it. Two wrenches, 19mm and 17mm if I recollect. I took the gas can for the lawn mower and caught the runoff. Easy to get in and out. Think the hose was around 40 from 944online.com...

75ohm, what you did is pretty much what I'm planning to do.....but in my
case, I decided to order both hoses. If I'm looking at the diagram right, I
think that one is for the supply side and the other is for the return side.
They connect to the two hard lines that run up to the engine compartment.
Since I'll be under there anyway.......
Oh...and a new fuel filter too. Total cost was around 100 bucks from Pelican.
I checked the two hoses under the hood (from the hardline to the fuel rail)
and they look like they'll be okay for a couple more weeks....but then
they'll be replaced too. 20 year old rubber scares me now.
PS> I like the lawn mower gas can idea.....hadn't thought of that. Gas
ain't cheap! Maybe my lawn mower will run better on super unleaded.

Good deal! There are a few options on the lines over the exhaust manifold... Rennbay, Lindsey, Pauerman (sp?).
Good luck and yes, the craftsman lawnmower likes super!
