Another thing to consider is how long it has been sitting broken. If coolant is pooled on the piston from a severe leak it can cause the rings to corrode and possibly seize to the piston and cylinder walls. The degree of deterioration is dependent upon how long it has been out of service. Hopefully the PO squirted oil into the cylinders before storing it and put the plugs back in.

This may be a stupid question, but how do you know it's a blown head gasket?
I had a friend with a Honda convinced he had a blown head gasket but instead it was a leaky exhaust manifold.
Again, could be a stupid question, but I'd want to make sure that's what it was. If you find out it wasn't, be sure you don't tell the guy. Instead, make it sound like it's much worse. Yeah. Stick it to 'em!

like i said, I am just going by what the owner has told me over the phone. it sure would be nice if the head gasket wasnt blown! I think I could probably pick the car up for arround $2500. I figure it might be a gamble but I could easily recover the cost in parts right? When I owned my n/a a few years ago I rememver the turbos and their trannys were selling at a premium. thanks again

So yeah, you I would actually offer him $2500 and probably go no higher than $3500, really.

A buddy of mine picked up a nice 86 951 with a blown head gasket. Got it for under 3K and it had 18" hollow spoke twist wheels and a Vitesse Stage 2 kit on it. Replaced the head gasket and a few coolant lines and the car has been perfect since...
Of course, it could of needed a whole new motor. You never know until you open it up.

Well said...ehem, take the hint, buddy. If it's in great condish other than the alleged blown HG, scoop it up for cheap.
