Default Smells like ... farts?

I've mentioned before that a hot draft, and occasionally puffs of smoke, come into the cabin through seams in the centre console. Well this evening I was giving a buddy a ride in my 944 (1987 non-turbo), and we kept accusing each other of farting before I finally realized it was the fumes coming into the cabin. They occasionally have a sulfur-type whiff.

Question I have is, what the hell's the source of this? For awhile I thought it was just a gap somewhere letting in engine fumes, but no ... then I thought it was the ventilation system, but the vents don't admit any air at all when the system is off (and while the seams are coughing out their hot air). Then I thought it was a hole in the exhaust, or maybe a bad gasket at the manifold, but now ... I mean the exhaust doesn't have a sulfur-type smell, does it? Did I hear once that funny smells could usually be traced back to mould in the ventilation system? Yet the vents don't let in any air at all, it seems!

I'm totally puzzled, man.

Sulfinated battery? Does the battery seem weak or anything?

No, the battery's totally fine. It's only a year or so old, in fact. And I recently bought a used cover for it, so it's no longer semi-exposed to the elements.

+1 for the cat. A bad cat will also generate a lot of heat which may be your heat source also. It would be a good place to start the search.

Your catalytic converter is bad.

I will be interested to see what you replace it with, as all the versions I found in the US were considerably smaller (and lasted less) than OE.

The size difference is because stock is 1/2 converter and 1/2 resonator.

Kind of on that line...I worked for a rental car company and we had a car that smelled like poop. No matter what we did the odor would not leave. We finaly found the problem. A renter shoved a dirty diaper behind the dash.

Holy crap! I hope you tracked them down and pounded the bejesus out of them.

Anyway the consensus seems to be that it's the catalytic converter, either it's gone bad or it's leaking (or both). Kind of a relief.

And by the way I happened to see behind the dash the other day and it was feces-free.

The glovebox is clear. Anyway it wouldn't account for hot gases leaking in through the centre console.
