Exclamation Does $1800 for timing belt & water pump sound right?

Dont get me wrong fellows I love my car but this is ridiculous.

I wont name names but I was just quoted a staggering amount and I'm still woozy from the blow.

My timing belt skipped time destroying the head. I figured while I'm getting it replaced I might as well do the water pump.

I assumed it would be round 1k especially since I BOUGHT ALL THE PARTS.

But 1800, WTF!!!

Am I overreacting or do I need to go and talk to the shop owner and see if we can work something out?

Mine was in that neighborhood at Reitmeir's Werkstat in northern CA. The parts unfortunately aren't the expensive part.

that's horrible.

i got quoted that much on the HIGH end for doing the same job on my turbo, but my quote was including parts.

ended up doing it myself (sans WP) and made my world that much easier......

It's been a while but I want to say mine was $1100 (old NA) and included the waterpump being replaced as well.

im thinking i heard wrong now 'cuse the last time i talked to him the job with me suppling the parts was 8-900ish.

I'm really hoping I heard wrong. I'll check back on monday.

Oh and Eurosport wanted 3k but that included $1500 worth of parts too.

$1100 I can live with. its that xtra kick in the nuts is whats stressin me.

When I did mine I spent about 700 dollars in parts AT DEALER COST! so the 1800 does not sound bad at all to me.

Let me do the math for the DIY route:
$160 parts for head gasket kit
$160 parts for timing belt kit
$120 Head machined + valve job
---------------------------------------
$440

Plus valves

Labor? It took me and another first timer ~8 hours (and plenty of clarks-garage)

We learned a lot! Do it yourself!

Have a wrenching party. You'll get to know the 944 guys near you, have fun, fix your car, and you'll be out a little money for beer and pizza.
