It can be $1200 to $1500 just for the TB/WP Job. If you killed the engine with a broken belt, then yeah, it would prolly be $1800+

Let him do what is is good at.

I sucked it up and had mine with this attitude. More nervous than going to the Doctor. We talked, told him what I wanted and how long it took to save the money to give him free reign. Other issues, he asked if I wanted them fixed, and I reminded how long it took me to bring it in for the front of engine service, do the timing belt, and whatever needs to be replaced so long as it saves me in labor and has nothing to do with my clutch which needs to be replaced. BREATH

I now have enough confidence to adjust the tensioning after 1,000 miles. And if I need help....

Plus, I have gotten some great deals on parts. He is sponsoring me in a manner of thought. I spend my money with him, he gives me great deals. Hard to ask for more when you have one of these cars. Maybe you will be as lucky. Go for it. Anyway, You'll be able to do it yourself after owning the car for a while, problem is; you need a fresh start with it. Give yourself the luxury of not having to worry about that problem for another 30,000 miles.

exactly like someone slapping sense into us. Heck, I am ready to sell the beater and get something nice for the street, like a 951. Although I have yet to begun to understand the language of turbo. Probably just get a NA which is compatable with the track toy.

A lot of it depends on just how "destroyed" the head was. I took that dangerous trip down memory lane and pulled out my reciepts for that same work, done just a little over a year ago - right after I bought the car. $600 for parts (Stoddard) and $300 for labor for the complete front of the engine service. Had another $1K+ worth of stuff done at the same time...note to self, "never add up all of those reciepts!"

I think it depends on if you are in a high rent area and if the mechanic services a lot of rich customers.

well it's usually more than just a water pump and the belts. You probably also need oil seals, maybe the oil seal bearings, the rollers.

dealers will often charger much more than say paragon for parts so parts prices could be pretty high.

like my dealer said the balance shaft belts costs 200 bucks, I think it was gates, but I got a conti belt from pargon for $38. Also the rollers etc all cost more at the dealer.

and the rest will be labor.

I've heard 1500-2000 cdn is what it costs to do the full think , belts, water pump, oil seal.s

I did it myself and i think I spent 800 in parts, new water pump, seals, bearings, belts, rollers, and new sprockets.

but yeah it is a fairly expensive maintenance item but that's what you should expect with a german sports car it's not going to be cheap even when you do it yourself, you'll need special some tools etc.

I think I spent about $600-$700 for all the parts plus a set of Arnnworx tools (which I strongly recommend) to do the w/p, belts, rollers, and seals on my '88. Read up on Clarks-Garage and jump in. It looks and sounds intimidating, but it's really not bad if you take your time and do it right. It was my first time, and it took me probably 10-12 hours spread out over a weekend. The next time I do it, it'll probably take half that long.

I just quoted a buddy rate of $300 labor for water pump and timing belt if he brought all the parts. He spent $700 in parts for all rollers, water pump, head gasket set, etc. I normally don't do work on other people's cars but its funny he never took me up on my offer. Its good because I don't really don't want to do it anyways so I guess he'll be doing it himself.

My early 85 was just under $1000. I'm not sure exactly cause it was 1100 with them installing an alternator and some other **** they did for me.

Most of the prices quoted in this thread are just for the parts + labor on belts and pump as basic maintenance. From your post, it sounds as if you also need the head removed and one or more valves replaced. If this is the case, $1800 might not be indecent if it includes the machine work and parts for a complete valve job (i.e., a refreshening of the head while it is off). A new waterpump and belts runs about $500 in parts. Are these the only parts that you have procured, or do you also have a completely rebuilt head and all gaskets required/desired (i.e., cam tower base, head gasket, front seals)?
