A couple years ago, a shop gave me a labor quote of 30hours for an engine swap.

I think the book rate on a head gasket is 10 hours... I'd say an engine swap is twice that. There's a lot of little ****.

I can look it up in the morning, but IIRC it is something around 10 hours.

Lol, I dropped the motor out of my turbo in just under 3 hours and I was trying to let things drain as much as possible. 2:50 minutes of sliding around on a oil/coolant/PS fluid soaked floor, and 10 minutes of actual "dry" work

10 hours for an engine swap? Wow that shop must be DAMN good. I consider myself to be a pretty decent mechanic and it took me nearly 25 hours to pull off a swap with a full shop at my disposal. I would consider 30 hours of labor for shop time to be about right.

I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I charged a customer 30 hours for something that takes about 7-8 hours.

We pulled an engine out of a 944 using a lift in a few hours. Not too bad. Going in took only a bit longer. 10 hours, being meticulous sounds about right. But at what 75-90 bucks an hour, I would rather take 50 hours in my garage. But that's just me.
