Default 924 to 944 conversion?

ahoy there,

i'm a bit of a newbie here myself so please forgive my possibly pointless question.
recently i spotted an old 924 sitting in a yard not far from me, so i pulled in and asked about it. the owner wants rid of it as soon as possible (i could take it away for less than 100). now, i don't really like the 924 but i love the 944.

would it be worth my while picking up this old crock, stripping it out and trying to convert it into a 944? are there any major differences besides the drive train, running gear, quarter panels, and front wings? is it possible to put a late model 944 interior into a 924? could i get much money back on the old 924 parts?

cheers for any input,

-redmund

hm- for the cost it would take , you could buy a nice 944. Engine, trans, torque tube, suspension, body, hvac controls, dash, brakes, wheels- all different. Going 924S to 944 would be easier but still not worth the $ in the long run.

924's are sweet! if nothing else mabe you could buy it for 100$ part it and start saving for a 944, but a conversion sounds like a real headache.

Oh, and welcome

in a 924 shell possible, but not worth it.

Of course a 924S is down right easy. All you need is two fenders, front spoiler and then the 2 rear qtr panels. Costly due to the body work, but cheap if you plan to do alot of body work anyway and have a parts car.

Not sure why you would want to do it however.

Is it an S or a regular Audi-engined 924? That would determine your answer.

yeah, i had also been weighing the option of parting it out and putting that cash towards a 944. maybe i'll do that instead.

Yeah, I bought one in the same shape for the same price with the intention of parting it out. I had a friend restoring one, so it worked out well for both of us.........

If you have the time, you can learn alot from parting a car, maybe even make a buck or two listing the parts on ebay.

the change under the seat is probably worth more than the car!

well i certainly have the time now. lost my job about 3 weeks ago (steel fabricator). big lump of savings to live from until i go to college next september so i might as well have something to do between now and then. parting it is then!

that car with an audi will be very very slow..... if you put a 944 body on it / bigger wheels etc it will probably cost as much as buying a 944 turbo and a vw bus is going to be faster after all the added weight.

If this is a 924 NA than this conversion talk is madness, and that is coming from someone who supports the 2.0L 924 as a fun little car. If it is 4 lug model than forget you ever saw it and shop for one with 5 lug wheels.

You can pick up a project 924 turbo for 2-5 hundred bucks, and that turbo changes everything. Doing a body kit on a 931 is not fruitless. I would not recommend doing a 944 conversion but something more correct for the 924 line would work (and does). Not only is the turbo rare but they are more fun stock and much more responsive to tuning than any 944 NA.

I've had them all over the years, 924 NA, 931, 944, and for a short while a 924S and now the herd is thinned down to only 4 931's coz they are just that much fun to play with, and still relatively economical. OEM parts are beginning to get scarce though so that is something to keep in mind..

NA auto is going to be tough to even part out, especially if it is a 4 lug car. If it's a 77 by all means run away.
