because were all cheap bastards who dont have the money for a 600dollar maf. we would rather spend 60 dollars on a different one that will get us similar results and we are competent enough to wire them ourselves.

if you really want a bosch part you could use the VWAG 1.8T MAF, its the same size...

When I upgraded to a MAF I trippled my power output. Great mod!

I too am waiting for another person to successfully do this mod and post some results/feedback. There were a couple in this thread who had started...

It would be nice to see where people got to on this one - especially to know if there were any gains at all simply from removing the AFM

Errr.... you realize that you are responding to alina, who was banned again under the "asia944" disguise last year?

John D. did the honors himself.

The Split Second MAFs are about $900! I would rather convert to a MegaSquirt.

Someone needs to post a FAQ on the MAF upgrade for the NA.

Could this MAF method be converted to a 944S2 3.0L as well? I see that damn barn door MAF as a significant power loss area. Thoughts?

ohhh you betcha.

the reason the contour/audi 1.8 maf is so nice for us is because its the same size as the NA J-boot and its easy to wire.

not sure about the diameter of the S2's piping but if you can find one thats pretty close and still has the 4-wire 5-slot plug you should be able to do it.

This is a fantastic thread. After some people get it going, I'm surely going to follow suit.

I'd love to be involved with the build of this. I am curious on the ECU/DME programming needed to make the modification work.

Given the restrictive nature of the older technology, this could be quite a development. Those in the know, please do your best to keep us all posted on the progress.

I think a lot of BMWs and older Miatas use the barn-door AFM. Other Mazdas and the Probe as well. You might look and see if anyone is getting gains from replacing the AFM on a Miata or MX6/Probe, my feeling is that it's not particularly restrictive and just replacing it with a MAF is not going to yield much.

IMO a proper replacement for the AFM would be an AFM emulator using a MAP and a MAF and a temp sensor. Ideally you could datalog on hot, humid days and cold dry days and the like and then build a 3D map to convert the MAF signal what the AFM would output. MAFs respond differently to temperature and humidity than an AFM would.

ALot of older toyotas use the AFM setup too. The MAF should respond to heat and temp just fine. Most have a seprate IAT sensor just like the AFM does, As long as you get the size right for the MAF it shouldnt be to hard to tune in using a Piggy back setup. As for Performance gains, DEF better throttle response and High end. You need to remember that in order to use the extra air flow you NEED to NEED the extra air flow, SO on a stock setup I would bet maybe 10hp and 15 TQ gain. But n something built even better. A Maf setup is best for a NA, A MAP would be alot harder to tune for, depending on placement and cams ect You could get alot of osilations in Vacuum/pressure. A map setup is better used on a Forced induction setup. Guru racing made a MAP sensor conversion for our cars along time ago before they went out of business They had alot of problems with the setup and tune of the system.
