Default Please help troubleshoot my AC

My AC was cooling fine and then all of a suden, right before going to the Porsche 250, it decides to die on me. I think it's a relay somewhere, but not sure. Here are the symptoms:

- The light on the AC switch on the dash illuminates
- The secondary fan kicks in and it blows harder
- There seems to be no drag on the engine, so I assume the compressor is not engaging
- The air does not cool down at all when going from vent to AC
- Usually, you can hear a relay, maybe in the dash, kicking in when keeping the temp in the car - it's not engaging

How can I check the relay under the hood? What else should I try? Thnaks!

-Bart

P.S. The P250 was pretty good - at least it didn't get rained out.

there is a single wire that goes from the front of the compressor to the relay. There is a plug for it about six inches from the compressor. Turn the car on-key- and turn the a/c button on. If that plug is not getting 12v then its a relay or something. If it IS you may need a new "coil" for the compressor. I replaced mine and it wasnt that difficult, you dont even need to pull the lines but must drop the compressor down to pull the front of it apart. Basically its an electromagnet that engages the clutch. I put mine in and then my a/c worked fine. If your system is leaking and has no freon- it also would not engage.

Dumb question here, but is that not the low pressure line right there at the drier? I think it is just low of freon because everything electrical seems to be okay (fuse OK & relay responds as it should). I bought a can a R134a, but the fitting doesn't attach to mine. Maybe that is the high pressure one there.

Haven't downloaded the manual yet, but I will search for some info. Thanks for any help.

R134a and freon are incompatable and have different fittings. Chances are your car has not been converted to r134a, so you'll not be able to do much with the stuff unless you want to flush your system and convert it over.

You should be able to take it to any place that works on AC and have them check if it's low on freon and put more in if needed. If you've got a leak and it's all gone, it'll not be so simple though.

Off Topic: Did you drive the 968 to Barbers? I saw a nice black one on Sunday driving around the loop. Was that you?

I was in my car at Barber. Oddly, when I was pulling out of the area where I parked, there was another black 968 that got right behind me. We thumbs-up'ed each other. He had 16" Cup 1s on his and it was cleaner than my car that day.

Bart,
Add a can of R134 and see if that solves your problem.

Well, an update. I am getting 14v to the compressor when craked, but the clutch isn't kicking in. However..........I may have determined the problem. My 944 building buddy suggested I might havea clog in the system. I am starting to agree. When I first checked the LP line by the compressor I have over 100 psi. Don't recall the exact #, maybe 110. So, by his suggestion, I drained some of that pressure off at the LP fitting. Got it down to about 40 psi and then took it back to 70 psi with my can of R134A. Still nothing. I think the next step is to find somebody with gages to check the HP and LP side to see what's up.

If you're getting 14v to the compressor and the clutch is not engaging, you probably have a bad clutch. The reason the pressure was so high was because the compressor was not actually moving any refrigerant and the system was equalized. You really need a set of guages to confirm this.
