Default 1989 944 S2

Hey Guys,

Just dropped my 928 off at the shop for basic yearly stuff. Saw a very nice 89 S2 at another shop nearby, called it only has 42,000 km on it=26,000 miles. Looks very sweet, the improved Turbo Look, however this thing is an auto, which I am not too sure about. Yes my 89 928 is an auto but with the big 8 cylinder she gets around just fine, really doesn't need a stick.

Any experience with an auto 89 S2? Should I avoid? I guess power is comparable to an older unmodded Turbo? I guess with the auto you avoid the major clutch issues that some of these cars have....?
BTW asking price is 12.000 Canadian(about 11 000 US), looks very mint, mentioned some major work had been done(rubber flywheel?????)
Any thoughts? Thanks

The car came from Japan, just recently imported. What kind of performance would one see in the Auto versus 5 speed? Will it be a total let down after driving my 928 auto? The guy says it's mint, needs nothing, but the auto factor, makes me hesitate.

Unless the auto tranny lets you rev past 4k rpm, the performance will suffer greatly! Anyone know the shift points of a late model automatic?

Take it for a spin and judge by yourself

But I'd say pass unless the price goes a lot lower

Thanks guys appreciate the input. Love my 928's pure grunt but I have always had a soft spot for 944's, just beautiful. I do not like the fact that it is an auto, guess I have to drive it. The 928 doesn't need a stick, it's not a rocket off the line but once the power starts winding up it just goes on forever. At 80 mph it just starts to come into it's own, I know different cars but I like em all.

Sysgen; what is a reasonalble price for us in Canada. I think if I liked it, leave a business card offer like 9 Canadian?
Anyone know what the auto performance is like?
Not enough 951's available in Canada, usually bagged and over priced....sigh

My PO and his friend just purchased each a turbo, didn't get to try it No clue how much they paid.

For the price I dunno, jbrill from Vancouver just purchased a S2 for $13,500 here and it's gorgeous and from what he says, also in mint condition.

So $12.000 sounds too much. $9,000 sounds fair if it's really in perfect condition.

If you look at the car, can you please grab the VIN and PM me with it? I'd like to check it out for the PCA registry, as I've never heard of an S2 automatic.

I really dont think that an S2 was available with an automatic transmission, anywhere in the world. The S and Turbo were not, and Im nearly positive the S2 was not either.

944 n/a's did have the Auto Trans option through '89, but no auto trans was available for the other models until the Tiptronic came out for the 968.

Sounds like something is odd with this car.

Okay I am guessing that the shop just called it an S2 when it is actually a base 944. I think(and please correct me) that means this thing has a 2.7L instead of the 3.0. What was the power output of this thing? Obviously less than the S2, with an auto I think I will definitely pass. Auto+V8=YES
Auto+4cyl=not a chance
Thanks guys I will get a closer look and get back if I can reolve anything.

Yes, I'd stay clear until this is all confirmed. Didn't know they never made Auto S2's, very strange!

But the milage is so low.....

It has such low miles because it is no fun to drive. I wouldnt buy a 944 with an auto.
