Default Fix it

I vote to fix it.

What is the fear of a salvage title? Maine Titles info

I know it hurts resale, but if you plan on keeping it. There was a repaired 928 floating around Rennlist a while back and I was tempted to buy it. It seems in NH all you have to do is have it inspected and it can be registered. It seems like they do the inspections once a month at different locations.

Good luck.

Update..

GOOD NEWS! The body guy called me and told me that he only estimates $2200 for repair!!! With new parts and labor!
Now the question is how to get max $ from the insurance dude, and use it toward a new paint job!

Great! How much was the insurance wanting to give you before? Are you planning on having the whole car painted? I thought the paint looked great in your pics.

The paint isn't bad.. the hood/roof and fenders has faded considerably. It still shines up good, but after seeing a newly painting one.. it takes years off its looks. I also have many rock chips. Overall that paint is decent.. but if I can swing in a whole paint job, SWEET!

I am not sure how much the insurance guy will pay.. I am hoping 3800-4000..

He said 4500 would total.

The body guy told me to have the insurance guy call him to work it out.

glad to hear it's gonna work for ya! FWIW, whenever I've had an estimate done for a full paint job, with NO body repair, it's been around $5,000.00...

Default THE CHECK IS IN THE MAIL

Well, I got a message today from my insurance guy. I think I am in the good.

He spoke to my body guy, who quoted $3185 with repairing the faceplate vs. replacing. So that means I get a check for $2185 to fix it. (Less deductible).
The body guy quoted me $2200.. which means I fix the car for free.

Or, I fix the car, replace parts with used instead of new, and use the difference toward a paint job!

Granted my paint isn't that bad.. (it's already been repainted once). However, I just saw a red '84 that looks like a brand new car. I want that.

So, $2185 is in the mail to me. The car will be fixed.

Now I wonder if I SHOULD go with brand new parts? Or go used.. save for paint job.

Thoughts?

Thanks!

Very relieved,

-Rhad

Whatever you do..... Just get it fixed right. If you lowbuck the repair to try and parlay the savings into a lowbuck paint job, you're gonna be dissapointed. 2 wrongs don't make a right. You could still use second hand parts to save some money. But don't expect to repaint your car for less than $3k and be happy with the outcome. If you want to do a color change, thats more $$$$. You gotta cut in the doors, jambs, under side of the hood, engine, blah blah blah. When you start talkin' that kind of money, you should just look for a nice red 951 or S2.

3K for a paint job would be fine.. I keep hearing 5K numbers that seem a little harder to obtain.
I don't ever plan on selling this car, so everything I do is a labor of love.

I would keep it the same color. Black is the best sports car color in my book.

This body guy comes highly reccomended from my Porsche Mechanic, who uses him when he has accidents while test driving cars he is fixing.

He said for $2200 it would like like new.

no real reason to buy new parts, actually if you buy "new" parts they will prob. be aftermarket new japan parts that are not made as well. I would much rather have a used OEM fender than an aftermarket tin metal one anyday.

What are you asking for them? What shape are they in?
PM if you like. Thanks!

Check received! Got my check for $2K in the mail. The estimate accounted for $1969 in new parts. So if I can get a good deal on some used parts, I can use the addition funds to paint this puppy! HOW EXCITING! The body guy is on VACATION though.. so it will have to wait a week to get started.. hopefully I can find parts prior to that time!

Thank you all for your help and insight in this matter, I will keep you posted on the repair process.

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Status update!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Great news! The body guy says he can totally save the front valance! He is ordering a new fender from Porsche, and will fix the whole car and paint it for 3 K.
Minus $2200 from insurance, leaves me with $800 for a new looking 89 944! WOOHOO!!

Since you are paying him that much, just make sure that the new fender is indeed new, not used and is an original Porsche piece, not some aftermarket knock off.

How much is he charging you for the new fender?

That sounds awfully expensive dude. You should get a quote for him just painting and putting the fender on. Getting a fender from Porsche will be way more expensive than finding a fender off a parted car. You should work something out were u break even. You should ask how much the fender will be and deduct from the total price and tell him you'll get the fender. There are plenty of parts cars out there.
