Default Quick question: value of 86 LSD tranny from non turbo car?

Hi,

I'm going and pick up a torque tube in the next hour and the guy says he has an 86 lsd tranny in great shape from a non-turbo car. How much is it worth? How much should I offer? I'm not really sure how the gearing compares to my non-lsd 89 S2 tranny... The tranny code is 220 right? And when I spin one hub the other should spin in the same direction right? Thanks in advance!

very valuable for 944 spec racers like me!

Too bad you are so darn far away.

You are right on how to tell a limited slip.

Hi !

My 85.5 Na is originaly equiped with a lsd tranny...

Gearing looks the same as a 951.

At 100km/h it run around 2700rpm.

Don't about the value...

an LSD tranny from a given car (ie n/a, S, S2, turbo) will have the same gearing as a non-LSD tranny from the same car. the n/a tranny is weaker than the S2 tranny - I don't know how well it would hold up to the added tq of the S2; your non-LSD S2 tranny can be fitted with an LSD btw.

fyi, gearing on the lsd n/a is quite a bit different than that on the turbo; turbo should be turning 2269 rpm at 60mph, the n/a cars up to '87 should be turning a bit over 2300 (5th gear in the 87 and before n/a is similar to 5th in the turbo, but the other gears are quite a bit different), and the 88+ n/a should be around 2615 at 60 in 5th

I'd say no more than 100 bucks including shipping, and with that, you can send it to....

That's a pretty good price. FWIW, I picked up my 944S LSD tranny for ~$700 from a lister couple of years ago.

Let me piggyback on this thread: what would a 85.5na LSD (taller 5th) tranny with 125k miles be worth if it's located in SoCal?

it's non lsd after all, I turned one hub and the other turned in the opposite direction, but it is as clean as hell with low milleage. On a more positive note, I picked up a pristine torque tube and a powersteering rack/pump for $250 canadian dollars. If anyone is interested in the tranny, I can pick it up for a good deal, the guy also has a seat/door panel combo that I have never seen, the middle inserts are pinstriped white as well as the door panels... really cool to say the least...

Seriously... More money than I have to spend.

Otherwise I would have gotten one years ago.

I have to question what a 20 year old LSD is worth. It has got to be pretty well worn at this point.

That is one reason I am very hesitant. It is one thing to get one cheap, but if am going to spend 700 on an LSD box the darn thing better work.

For those prices I am inclined to save more money and just have a new LSD put in one of 2 spare gearboxes. It may cost $1500, but at least I know it will work.

There are only a couple wear items inside the factory clutch type LSD, so they can be easily rebuilt. I have not priced the discs, but I dont think they are rediculously expensive. And they actually last a long time. Especially in a lower torque application like on an n/a or S transmission.

The only/cheapest aftermarket clutch type LSD that I have found is a Guard, and they are $1750. The dealer price is $2500 for new LSD unit. Yes, the torsen/quaife/torqe biasing diffs are a little cheaper.

Finding an LSD transmission, even higher mileage, for under $1000 is not a bad price, assuming its not missing any teeth on gears, pinions, etc....

This thread has the parts list for a LSD rebuilt (it's for a 951 tranny, though). I recently got these parts from Sunset, and it's even cheaper than what's listed. Now I just need to find a tranny shop to do the labor...
