Don't know.

I spent a fortune last year buying original Porsche replacement parts.

I know the parts are availlable, because when i called Guard for his LSD.
I ask him if it was rebuildable and he told me yes. He said its rebuildable with factory parts. So i guess his LSD is based on the factory unit.

I just got my factory LSD rebuilt. It didn't cost a fortune in parts; four clutches, two cone washers, transmission gasket set. All parts from Porsche through the dealer. I can check the invoice in a couple of hours and tell you what I paid for the factory parts.

There are different thicknesses of washers available to shim the LSD, so I doubt that there is such a thing as a rebuild kit. The parts for my LSD rebuild were from the dealer (PCNA Atlanta parts warehouse) and their cost (full Porsche list price, converted to US dollars) were as follows:

951.332.551.00 LSD clutch plates _ 2 @ $53.80 = $107.60
928.332.555.00 LSD cone washers _ 2 @ $25.30 = $50.60
917.332.552.10 external spline clutch washer 1.90 mm = $38.70
917.332.552.11 external spline clutch washer 2.00 mm = $38.70
477.300.912.B transmission gasket set 21D = $67.90
088.301.467.B transmission cover gasket 23D = $9.00
016.301.467 transmission cover gasket = $18.40

The labour for the rebuild, not including removal/installation, was US$440, which may have included a mark-up for the dealer sub-letting the work to a transmission specialist. Fluids and taxes were extra. HTH

Paragon Products has the gasket set available for a better price ($47.39) Maybe you should contact them to see if they have the other parts available.

917.xxx part numbers are too cool

I think I've heard somewhere that the LSD can be modified to up to 75% locking with factory parts. Anybody know if there's any truth in this?

And how can you tell that an LSD is in need of a rebuild?

You can measure the breakaway torque, which is the amount of torque it takes to turn a wheel with the other not turning. For example you can chock the front wheels, jack up one rear wheel with the car in neutral and the parking brake off, and turn the raised rear wheel with a torque wrench. Use a lug nut even with the center of the wheel so as to not skew the results (think of an 'L' drawn from the hub to the lug and the wrench as the rest of the 'L'.)

Offhand I do not know the breakaway torque for a 951 LSD but 30ish foot pounds is probably decent.
