Post Cutting the Cross-Over pipe with a Sawsall

Just wondered if anyone else has tried this. I am getting pretty tired of stripping/drilling bolts. And since I don't really plan on keeping the old cross-over any way, I was thinking about cutting it up to make the removal of it easier and faster. Any comments, suggestions?

If you get a clean cut, you could then have it flanged by a welder afterwards. This would then make it easier for future work. Just a thought...

Just a thought on this one. A good friend of mine was burned severly while using a saws-all under his S10. Hit gas line .sparks from motor ignited the gas=a lot of pain!!! Think twice on this before doing it.. Good luck , FRED

Still, a pipe you can sell for $50 or $75 is better than zero. . .

I have had that thought every time I have to remove the cross over pipe. I wish I can do it just once and demolish one just to defy the idiotic German engineers who designed the unit.

Will cutting it up really make it any easier to remove ? You still have to get at the same bolts.

well it is hard to finegal out of there once the bolts are loose in one piece. If you do cut it and ever plan on rewelding it or flanging it, draw a line down the pipe before you cut it and cut through that line so you can line things back up once its off the car.

Just ordered (and received) the two-piece unit from Lindsey (thanks Dave). That alone is going to save hours. Gotta' clean it a bit and heat-wrap it first though.

I'm lookin at the SFR stage II header with the 3 peice crossover built in for when I get a turbo... that thing's nifty... but extremely expensive, so it'll be a while...

I've always thought it'd be touche to cut one into about a hundred pieces and mail it back to Stuttgart. Damn things.

The yellow circles show the two bolts that I am have trouble getting to. Right now I am using socket with a U joint, but I am not really getting all the torque I need to get them loose. The lines shows where I was considering cutting it. This would give me better access from directly underneath. I didn't think this thing had much value based on what I have seen them selling for on EBay lately. Maybe I will take some pictures when I cut it up for those of you that despise this thing as much as I do!

13mm 3/8" drive with built-in wobble. Works wonders. Kind of hard to find, but worth having.

Have you tried a U joint with the 13mm socket on an extension? stick it in the gap between the collectors... those are a bitch and a half to get off, I know...
