Default Engine removal w/head off

ok,ive tried reading clarks-garage and the haynes manual.i even tried searching both forums on removing the engine without the head.after alot of thinking and pondering,im considering,no i want to drop the motor out of the car.current status of the car('87 951) is,current parts that are off the car:cam cover, head, headers, alternator, brackets, power steering pump, oil cooler housing, waterpump, pulleys, timing belts,rollers,etc....ill just show you pictures.from what ive read,i still need the head and cam cover attached for the rear tow point.do i have to reinstall to drop the engine or is there another way?thanx

what i did was clip the chain onto the front right tab thingy, then wrap the chain around the exhaust manifold side engine mount arm and put a block of wood in between the chain and your block to prevent any damage i used a 4x4 block of wood, im sure a 2x4 would do just as good. a little redneck but it works fine, this might help

ur gunna have to hold up on the rear of the engine when pulling it from the bell housing but its really not hard at all.

I used the bottom rear head stud with a lot of washers. Worked perfectly.

I fabricated a bar out of aluminum with a center eye for a chain and attacted across the rear two head studs. Attached the other end to the front eye as shown in the marked up picture above.

No problem with a hoist and as someelse said, you have to pull forward as you lift.

Good luck!

I used one of the rear head studs (as others have suggested). Worked great for me.

Bottom. Very easy, especially with the head off. Through the top is harder than it looks. The input shaft is longer than you think .

bottom. very easy as long as the car is high enough. I had to put some 2x8's under the jack stands.

I went out the top and then in the bottom. Definatly go out the bottom. Out the top is a bitch. If you have a lift its easy to go in/out the bottom. Just lower the engine onto something, lift the front of the car, slide engine out, lower front of car.

I just pulled one out the top and all I've got to say is...

Take it out the bottom.
You won't have to lift the car as high as you won't have to clear the cam tower.
If you don't pull it straight out the clutch can bind on the torque tube. If you can push the clutch fork it will allow the clutch to move a bit - might help.

I used a sheet of plastic to slide the engine out. I folded the plastic in half, dropped the engine on a piece of cardboard and it slide very easily. This also keeps it very close to the ground which helps clearance. i found the oil filler tube was the highest point.

Good luck!

As for tricks to get the engine in/out.
I remove the front suspension (control arms, spindles and struts, leave the caliper hanging in the wheel well), and take it out through the wheel well. This lets you have the car ~4 inches lower, since the wheel wells are cut out just right to sneak an engine through.
I found the cam tower was the highest part, with the oil filler tube being a close second.

I as well used plastic, but I cheated. I laid down a big sheet of plastic (~8' x 8') and an upside-down piece of carpet (soft-side down). It slid like it was on ice. Worked wonderfully, and I had lots of scrap carpet around at the time, so once I was done, I just tossed it, solved 2 problems at once. I kept a piece for re-installation of course.
