After years of fence sitting on this mod, finding a hoop spoiler from a '91 951 on ebay for the ridiculous price of $240 pushed me into action. Or, more aptly put, forced me to research and buy the rest of the parts necessary to get this holy grail installed.

That's right, one gasket for $256.91!

Ordered the works from Sunset Porsche (best prices I've ever found on Porsche parts). Unfortunately these prices are almost 30% higher than when I first costed this stuff almost two years ago. At that time the wing was $670, so finding it on ebay for $240 helped justify this ludicrous outlay in my warped "sure this makes sense, its for my 44" universe. However, I think this serves as a pretty good argument to just go and buy a complete hatch with the hoop spoiler and be done with it. Even more so considering I still need to fab the brackets to attach the lower trim piece . . .

You won't regret it once it is on, but I hate to tell you that I didn't use that gasket, in the pet it looks extra, it is only on the 944 not 968.

Mine came from a wrecker, they didn't bother to unscrew the side trim, just pulled it off, the pieces you are quoted 194.01 for!

So I just glued the trim on without the side gasket, it does sit a little flusher.
I only used one gasket -

I bought it the first week I bought the car, I thought after they yanked it off they were having me on with the price, but I have realised now that $400 was a pretty good price (that is 400 A$).

The plastic trim under the hoop spoiler that I purchased is the RoW version, i.e. no third brake light. PET showed two gaskets were needed. However, having started disassembly its obivious that the gaskets appear to be purely cosmetic in that they are not required to prevent water from intruding into the cabin.

HOOP SPOILER INSTALL URBAN LEGEND #1: "The side trim pieces install with no drilling". Bull Crap. At least for the trim I purchased ('90 Turbo/'91 s2) you have to drill 1 extra hole in the metal frame surrounding the hatch glass at the point where the stock trim pieces are secured by a screw.

What I am confronted with now is trying to remove the seven screws that hold the stock wing in place. The threads are badly corroded and I have already bunged up the head of one of them to the point where drilling it out is my only option. So much for this afternoon project . . .

No, the 968 (late S2 turbo) glass is different than the 944/924 glass.

My holes matched up, but mine is a 968, though the bolts had long left this world. I had to drill out a lot of those screws,messy(oh yea dirt loves to live inside the rubber spoiler), and the sun went down. Making the little brackets is fun too, if the bolts are not exactly the right length they catch.
It is great when it is finally finished.

For the guys that have put a full 968 hatch on a 944, what have you done about the two latch seals?

On 944s, the latch lock/stud assemblies have the gasket integrated in the part, basically a rubber mold, attached to the hatch. On the 968, the latch seals are separate parts that screw to the body/frame. I dont want to put any additional screw holes into the body, so I dont want to use the 968 seals.

I think I can install the older 944 type latch assemblies onto the 968 frame but Im not positive. Also, there is a different part number for the latch assemblies for 90 and earlier 944s, and the wing type 91 944S2. Any ideas what is different on a 91 S2 latch versus the earlier 944s and the later 968s?

Oh you will, you can bet on it.

We've got so much great info out there on so many aspects of maintaining and upgrading these cars. Yet, for some reason, though everyone and their uncle wants to upgrade to a hoop spoiler, there does not seem to be any kind of a definitive, illustrated write-up on the process. I smell conspiracy.

To confound matters, the dis-information (though well intentioned) on this topic just muddles things up all the more. Granted, the hatch modifications that transpired from '83 through '95 on the 44 series are going to result in several possible approaches I gather. But regardless, I want to at least try and document what it's REALLY going to take to get my wing installed starting with a bag of parts.

For me, just getting the old wing off has required some unique tools (Lisle tool #13120 is perfect for the slotted nuts) and a 3/16 drill bit. Who'd a thought!?!?!?

I started taking pictures, but once you have stripped a few nuts and got the drill out, you don't feel so proud of your job, at least all the 'handy work' is covered once it is complete.

I have a few photos of mine being installed, but the reason I did not write up a definitive guide is that my wing pieces had some damaged tabs and I had to fabricate replacements without knowing how the stock tabs looked. This would have probably led to further confusion, so I let it go and just did what I had to do to get it installed. In addition, there are probably several variants of wings and hatches over the years, so one person's experience would not cover the breadth.

For the most part, it is not a difficult job. Just know that it can be done with a little tinkering.

So did you guys acutally get the 968 hatch or are you talking about fitting it onto a rubber spoilered 944?

I'm talking about fitting it ('90 turbo/'91 s2 hoop spoiler) on to the rubber spoilered 944 ('89 944s2). When I was researching this there were some minor Part# differences for the 968 configuration, mainly hatch latch gaskets/seals as I recall.
