Default MegaSquirt revisited

Hi all,

I did a search for MegaSquirt on Rennlist and found a bunch of threads, however none that showed anyone actually completed one that I could find..

Somewhere in the near future I'm thinking of doing one for my 944. Goals I want out of it is some programmability and to replace the flap door air meter with a mass air flow meter. I'm pretty familiar with then from the VW world, but haven't found anyone who has replaced their DME with one yet.

Thanks,

I was referring to the name...but I digress...

What is a megasquirt anyway? Sounds like an oxymoron...

Its a standalone engine management system without the big price tag.

Dan maybe I can help you with yours, I have an electronics background and have a couple of friends in the VW community that have finished theirs. Maybe we can write up a procedure for 944 applications.

http://www.bgsoflex.com/megasquirt.html for those who haven't heard of it. Pretty cool stuff.

I am not an electronics guru, but I do know basics and can solder pretty well. I will be installing it in a 944S race car.......

It sounds neat but what I don't get it this: Would you still use the DME to control ignition? If not, is going to a conventional distributor going to do the job as well as the DME? I had always thought one of the advantages of the DME was the integration of fuel and ignition control into one unit. Am I missing something here?

they have an add on, megajolt, that can control ignition and give you DIS with the same programability as the megasquirt.

Check Ebay, people sell them all the time already assembled and tested.

I'm going to use Megasquirt 'n Spark-Extra (just a tricked-out firmware version on the regular Megasquirt hardware) on my new "big bore" 951. I start talking about it in my turbo board thread here...

https://rennlist.com/forums/showthre...83#post2339483

Right now, these are the three most informational links for 944-specific Megasquirt info...

http://www.msefi.com/viewtopic.php?t=5474

https://rennlist.com/forums/944-turbo-and-turbo-s-forum/214251-stand-alone.html

http://www.darklightning.com/msns/

That last one rocks.

The biggest hurdle we're looking at now is how to work out the crank triggering. Ideally we can just condition the stock speed and reference sensors to ouput a compatible signal (too many teeth right now). If that doesn't work, we can go to a custom trigger wheel mounted up on the crank between the balance belt and the outer pulleys.

Mike C - there's no reason you'd have to go back to a distributor style ignition. MS (with the MSnS-E firmware update) is capable of controlling Ford's very powerful EDIS system, or just drive a pair of standard coils, or even 4 Coil-On-Plug units. I'll most likely go with COP, both for bling factor and lack of plug wires! (please disregard the bling factor comment)

I'm shipping my block up to Chris W. this week, so I have about 3-4 weeks until I'll need this system ready to rock. I have a V3.0 board waiting for me to assemble it, it'll be my 3rd one, so should only take an afternoon, 2-3 hours tops. Also just got the Innovate Motorsports LC-1 wideband O2 kit in the mail. Looks purdy!

Unfortunately, I think I may end up being the first guy to run this on a 944 (other than the guy that used it for his V8 conversion). Things were looking a lot easier if I could just continue following the step by step instructions that DarkLightning laid out. I'll try to keep good notes as I work on things for others to follow.
