Just curious what kind of prices are we talking? Who makes them? Is anyone running one? Any info would be good. A friend just got one for his WRX for 1600 which seems like a great price.

A good standalone with a wiring harness, sensors, tuning,... could be anywhere from $3-8K depending on what you get and who does the work.
For more accurate quote contact Chris White, he handles the Electromotive Tec3 for the 951.

My usual advice –
The price of the unit itself is not a good measuring point for the value of the system.
Make sure you get good support and the support is from somebody that knows the 951.

Years ago I ran into a nice fellow that bought a good Motec (serious $) set up. By the time he had it well tuned he had spent over $5k on tuning and dyno time. Not a great deal.

If you want to know any specifics about the Tec3 stuff give me a call (315-636-8716) and I will let you know what I know.

Andre, if you want to go the TEC-III route you can also try Scott Gomes at Under Pressure Performance. Plus he is only about 45 minutes from you, in Assonet.

Andre-

The only way you will put together a standalone for the 951 for under $2k is if you buy an used AEM off of ebay and do all of the work yourself (wiring, triggers, sensors, config, tuning). I am not even certain that can be done. This also won't include any tuning which is both difficult and time consuming.

I would say John's estimate of $3-8k is right although $3k sounds low if you include dyno time in that price.

AEM is making plug and play standalones for many of the Japanese cars today. They are pretty cheap, include some support and complete configs with base maps. It is a good unit as well. I have a friend with one and it just plugged in and it worked...well, at least it started. The basemap wasn't even close. He had to make alot of idle adjustments and it ran so rich he could barely drive it to the dyno. It should be pretty nice once he gets it all tuned though.

Good luck-

I had a tecIII on a turbo 928 and they are great. Well worth the $ and very easy to program. CW sells a bolt on for $3500.

good info thanks guys...I just hate to upgrade things that need to be upgraded later. If i spend say 3-4k on a stand alone. I think that is better than spending money on chips and a piggyback, and then when i get a different turbo spend more on chips and then a maf and spend more on chips...

It depends on what you want to do. if you are going to top out at 300-350 I would just go for one of the kits. If you plan to run a 3L at 600 hp on race gas one day or race go for a stand alone. Something like a tec III you can run pretty much anything you want to.

but aren't the kits like 4000 ish...for like 300-350... I mean i already have a ebc and tial wg. So how much would it cost to get upto say..330-350whp? turbo, chips, injectors? and MAF? am i about right?

Hmm, good question.

With the 350 kit dont you get a bigger turbo too ? Personally after doing a few custom turbo cars it is a lot more tunable to go aftermarket and a tec III is crank fire too. But there was not so much around as far as aftermarket FI like the 951. For optimum tunability a stand alone is probably the best.

I would think since you have a ebc and a tial, you would want a bit bigger turbo and bigger injectors to go along with that new computer.

All this custom stuff gets expensive in a hurry !

If you're learning to tune yourself and something simple, SDS works well, and priced nicely at $1249 + $90 for a MAP sensor. Again, you'll have to do an afternoon's worth of wiring yourself.

http://www.sdsefi.com/prices.html

It's a good system for beginners to learn on, yet powerful enough to make as much power as you want. I used it on my 2.5L and currently on my 2.8L. Doesn't have all the bells and whistles as the other systems, they stress "simple" in their design.
