Default NA filter relocated below fender behind airdam!!!

kind of a hack job. but the most ghetto setup gives the most hp.
I sourced a tube from a friend of mine that was 3in.
so it goes from the afm: 3in-3in-2 3/4in-filter.

the angles aren't "perfect" but with everything tightened down its very solid.
I bought a 23$ 90deg angle 2-3/4in raiator hose that was about 2 1/2 feet long and ended up hacking the shiesa out of it and using about 4$ worth of it..sheesh.

had to do some light frame modding and inner fender modding....(hack jobs)
and i need to find a way to protect the filter. I'll think of something. maybe even a little scoop down there that i can cover when it rains and stuff.

I had to cut the pipes. (angle grinders are cool![except that hot **** that hits your forearms!]), cut the hell out of the turn signal light to not crimp the hose, and cut the inner fender up.
in general, it's a pain to install.
but I think if i can get a good dyno reading, a smaller dia. filter and 2 3/4 in everything so you wouldn't have to chop your car up I could market these things! (please no one steal it from me.)

( it FEELS.....faster in the high end...but I dont trust myself anymore. Ive been driving the car slow lately cause of a ticket..grrr...so I can't tell. need dyno time!)

PIIIIIIIIICS!

actually it looks like he can remove it with ease without having to remove the wheel. good job ashton...although i am concerned about debris from the wheel hitting the filter...will the filter be protected by that black fender cover?

i dont see where you are gonna get ur ram air from...the opening next to the turn signal is higher and the ground is lower than where your filter is located

I think the concept of "ram-air" on a normally aspirated engine has been disproven in the past years. I remember reading a test on a Trans-Am website where it was impossible to increase intake pressure using oncoming air. I think what Ashton is going for here is just colder, more dense air. I think he is on the right track if he can keep the filter protected. Whether it turns out to be apower gain or power loss, he gets an A for effort.

Nice work, don't drive through any puddles or wash your car. I'll be interested to see how much or if it gives you any more power. Usually I would say keep it stock but creativity is interesting.

as well as the perfect velocity and resonance!

well, actually ram air works but not at speeds less than around 100 mph, and the pressure increase over atmosphereic is very small, but it is still something....and on a dyno how would this set up give you any more power than a k&n drop in filter, if that even makes any more power?

resonance.
you have to get the right length pipe and size.
when your valves close it creates a "wave" down the intake. the wave meets with other waves on their way into the cylinders. what Im trying to do is to get the waves to match up.
If you put the wrong lenght or size. there is a definate decrease in power.
see my other threads for more info.
this is also why some cars have variable intake tract length. to get the "waves" to go in the right way.

(closest I can explain it)

cool setup, just watch the dirt coming from that wheel. The filter will get dirty very quickly. I had the same loking setup on my GTI which was like 2 inches off the ground. No hydrolock in 2 years 4me. I religously cleaned my filter every month or so and i sampled oil to see how dirty it gets. Went back to stock after seing the negative results from an oil analysis.
"Ram air" setup is much better imho, used by many VW racers. basically a piece of 3 inch hose connected to the airbox and with the other end in the grille. Some test showed .1-.2PSI at speeds over 40mph.
Good luck with the setup, always great to see some progress.
