Default Update on 951...It's BAD :-(

Well, last week while entering an onramp to I-35E, I was greeted with an absurd lack of
power as well as white smoke. Had it towed Mon to the shop where I found out the tragic news: Blown head gasket, blown radiator, timing belt needs changing, O2 sensor replacement..with the possibility of seeing the valves being bent once the heads come off to change the gasket.
Going to be sitting in storage this winter while I come up with the remaining $3,000 of what the total aprox $6,000 bill should be...
I guess I should weigh the option of selling it...but I can't...I'm hooked and just can't get rid of it. Its almost as if the title of the 944T is a marriage license....'For better or worse, indeed'

I know how you feel man. Sometime it really is overwhelming and you want out. But you know you cant. Once shes running again you'll have no regrets; only smiles.

Cut that bill in half by doing all the work yourself.

OK, if the timing belt didn't break (you said it needs changing, not broken), why are there bent valves?

If you do everyhting yourself, the bill will be around a 1000 (assuming you dont buy a 600 dollar oem radiator).

I am having a hard time adding up the parts and labor to $6k.

Radiator, hoses, coolant, calmps $400 max
Head gasket set ~$150
Machine head, new guides/seals $550 max
belts $100
seals/rollers $150
Water pump $200
So far, roughly $1,550 in parts.

What else is on the repair bill? Are you in DFW?

Well, I'm not too mechanically inclined when it comes to engine work...gimme a bunch of audio/video components and some wood and fiberglass resin and ill have a field day :-)...but the extent of my mechanical work is air filters, oil changes and front rotors and pads. But I think I'm willing to learn, now.
I'm in St.Paul,MN...I forgot 35 splits at the Twin Cities of the South also...shoulda known that since I've driven semi trucks for the past 2 years. Thing is that I don't have a garage(live in an apt complex. I am going to store it at a storage facility not far from the shop its at, so I guess that could serve as a garage, sort of. I'd

The shop isn't sure if the valves are bent, but he was just quoting about 5,500-5,700 as a total bill when done....if that was the case. If they are fin that would knock about 1000-1200 off.

Get a manual and consider this a learning experience. DIY, shop carefully for parts and it's probably not going to be any more than $2k.

$6000 shop bills are an excellent motivator for teaching yourself how your engine works

Lol....very true. I thank all of you for your input as I have decided to buy the shop manual w/ turbo supplement tomorrow and hopefully dive into this experience. I have a week and a half of free time before traing on my new job begins, so basically I really do have all the time in the world. Thanks again and I assure ill be back with questions and topic searches :-)
