Default Questions....

I got a call yesterday saying my car is done.(mirrors/handles)
He did tell me the sunroof is not looking so good so i told him just to leave it and i will get some manual latches for it. Now my questions. Anyone have any experience with the manual latch? What do i need to get and what do i need to do? Any step by step instructions? Who can i buy it from? Any help would be great. I will post some pics when i get my car later tonight. Thanks.

Covered to death. Check out this page, probably as good a write up as you'll find.

I'll get tim to post when he gets out of school. We got a manual roof complete, removed the lifting arms from the rear of the hatch and the covers for them, manual roof dropped right in. Most of the wrecking yard places can get you the manual latches. There has been some very good write up's on the web that posts here point to.

Yeah, what he said. Knowing how you are about your car and liking the niceties and all, you would not like having the conversion. All you will end up with is a sunroof that is either down or out, but never tilted up. Consider fixing it, several guys on here have. Good luck!

tifo - you're on crack! the manual roof tilts all day long! all you do is spin the rear clips around and put them in the ridge where the sunroof seal sits. more tilt than a power roof!

dude, I just did the manual conversion a few weeks ago after my sunroof developed a mechanical issue that wouldn't have been diagnosed or fixed without costing even more money than I've already put in the damn roof. I went to my local Porsche dismantler (Porschapart in Toronto) and bought two latches from an old style manual roof. Then, I removed the arm tracks in the car and you're done. If a mechanical idiot like myself can do it anyone can. Find the Sid Vicious site for detailed instructions. You'll save hundreds trying to get the thing fixed, or, you can buy all my old parts to keep it running. The main relay is brand new.

thanks for the advice guys. I drove it home yesterday after picking it up and i didn't realize how much i missed the mirrors/handles. Drove it about 60 miles, runs great. I will try the manual conversion because the sunroof cable is all in the driver q-panel. Its pretty jacked up. I will remove the motor and just go manual. Anyone have access to a pair i can buy?

Let me guess, your gears stripped and you started driving above 20MPH and the cable wound itself out into the cubby?

I'm not on crack. The people who have done the manual conversion have stated here that it does not tilt. The actual manual cars have tilt from what I recall driving Eric's 83 car.

From Sid's site on the conversion:

"Removal is about ten times easier than the automatic version. Putting the sunroof in place is just about as easy, due to the fact that normally you would have to go to both sides of the car anyways.

You will loose the tilt up feature, personally I've never understood that feature. As a smoker it would be handy in the winter time, but cracking the window is just as easy."
