And they we wonder why shops don't like 944 guys.

Heck is $150 that much? Well it does seem a bit high, but given the labor costs maybe not. Changing a fuel filter is nasty job. Not super hard, but nasty. Figure it takes 15 min to do spark plugs and at least 1/2 to do fuel filter. If you though a cap & rotor and plugs were incudled then the bill would have been $300 or more. Add another $50 for the oil change and $10 for filter and you are $360-400. Alot of money? Sure, but remember you are PAYING someone to get their hands dirty. That is were most of the costs are incured.

Has anyone done a "tuneup tutorial" (or even just a parts list)? I just did a new Mahle fuel filter and universal O2 sensor change, figure I may as well do the rest. If there isn't one out there, I can put one together when I'm through.

What specific plugs are recommended (I prefer NGK, but what PNs?) And what are the specified plug gaps or other ignition settings/readings/values?

OK,

Here's the break down.

Spark Plugs (4) and labor = 59.91
Fuel Filter and labor = 88.13
Hazardous Materials = 5.00
Shop Supplies = 9.82

I am sorry, but that is outrageious no matter how you put it.....

Not just 944 guys, I used to get customers like this ALL the time. They have a misunderstanding of what they are getting or are uninformed. If you think you are specifically getting one service you should ask.

It got to the point where I would tell the customer, you do understand that a tune up means I am JUST changing the spark plugs. If the car has a running condition I make no expressed nor implied warranty that it is going to be running any better.

I was trying to be polite but there is nothing there out of line. That looks 100% normal. It is not outrageous. You didnt ask, you didnt get what you expected, and clearly you didnt ask for an estimate, this is 100% your fault.

Did you ask the shops you just called for an ESTIMATE? Call them back and find out what they want in price. THEN you will realize that you got exactly what you paid for. Further, I would have charged you that much when I was in Waco, Tx which probably DOES compare to Appleton. In Chicago, you likely would have paid more.

The one who did the work, did you ask what was included?

Who did the work, might I ask?

Hell, I will call around for you as automotive is my business. Funny, the seasoned people here are all saying the same things:

1) you got what you paid for
2) you should have asked what was included
3) 150 bucks is not that high, if high at all

What the hell do we know?

I also am sure I wouldnt have been upset if the price was higher....the whole point was that I was told $150 for a tune up....and a tune up means a tune up....not just changing my spark plugs and fuel filter......

The fact remains you didnt ask what was included. Your expecations were not reality. For what you paid, you have no room to complain.

Hey what happened to a couple of prologuy's posts.

Seem to have dissappeared?

BTW... I don't think of Oil Change when I hear tune-up. Personally I only thing of plugs, wires (if needed) & rotor.

Then again I have the luxury doing 90% of the work myself.

Man, I've never been able to get a tune up on $4.00 worth of beer. It's usually at least a 12 pac for around 9 bucks. 'Course, I'gotta change 8 plugs, heehee!

Hmmm,

I just deleted one of them...

Guess you aren't as perceptive as you thought.....

Ok, Ok....

If the price is right on, then so be it...just NOT what I was expecting in a tune up......

So now, I need to get an oil change and an air filter put in. Anyone know of a air filter and oil filter that fits the 86 944 NA that can be bought at an ordinary auto store? I know they dont have the MAHLE ones.....

Thanks

Six pack of Busch.
I save the good stuff for thermostat snap rings.

I am going to agree with Matt and others, sounds only slightly high.

When you have the clutch done (if you have the car long, you will) you had better ask the price, that $150 you are mad about now will be nothing.

I hate to pile on...but come on...you paid for 1 hour of labor, parts and disposal fee by my calcs...very reasonable. Most neighborhood part stores do not carry 944 filters, etc in stock. Call Paragon and they will be at your door for a reasonable price. I think you may have unreasonable expectations for the cost of ownership on a 944, especially if you want someone else to maintain it for you...
