Thank you!! A kitchen remodel took me off task for the past couple weeks. I am awaiting the gas tank still but have all the rebuilt hoses installed. Had some items just arrive back from powdercoating which came out really nice. I also rebuilt the WUR. Will add some pics shortly and plan to dive in full force in about 2 weeks!

Will definitely look forward to seeing more pictures as you make progress with the restoration! You're doing a great job thus far!

Thanks! I sincerely appreciate it!

My gas tank is due back in a week so I thought I should address some things while I have a little extra room.

How this happened is beyond me, but it arrived this way. 5 bolt broken on one axle

Luckily the remains easily came out. The axles themselves are good with good boots but I am going to rebuild them and do the axle seals while I am at it.

I think in my experience when I've had one or more bolts snap, it's been due to others becoming loose; at least, when I've found them snapped (most I've had at any time was two on one joint), the others have indeed been found to be loose...

Brings back a lot of memories. My '80 931 was that same two tone color. Amazing how you could actually order the turbo without disc brakes and a non-turbo with disc brakes. Car ran great once all the issues were worked out. Good luck with it.

Yep. I sold a white 1980 last year with four wheel discs and 5 lug wheels. It's the only option I wish this one had.

Got some work done yesterday. Rebuilt the axles while they were out. Old boots were good still and they had no damage but they were out and it seemed prudent. I installed all new bolts as well. The oetinger clamps included were too small and the concave washers included were too big. Go figure. Had to reuse the old washers and waiting on new clamps even though they are rather redundant given the ribbed axles.

Gas tank is done being shipped and should be back this week.

I had issues with broken CV axle bolts with my "82 931. Later discovered Lindsey Racing has special locking bolts, which I now use on My 951. What was the issue with the fuel tank? The early cars had steel tanks and at some point went to plastic. I do know that the huge plug on the bottom, where one of your CIS fuel pumps goes, has the same threads as on the later plastic tanks. Not sure though if the tanks themselves are fully interchangeable. Also, there should be a steel tube attached to the back of your "snail" transmission? This was apparently to take the place of the longer and heavier Audi transmission in the event of a crash.

Tank is being flushed. Car sat for 25 years. The tube was removed in order to get the tank out. It's being powdercoated as we speak.

I have plastic tanks in some parts cars but my steel tank is excellent just full of crud.

Great work on refurbishing the axles! Hope the tank arrives this week. How far away from attempting to start the engine once the fuel system is finished being restored?

Good question. I have installed new injectors and new plugs. Going to do the vacuum lines this week and reinstall the fuel meter assembly. Rebuilt WUR is installed. I am thinking I am ready for start up within 3 weeks assuming all goes well.

Assuming that you have already flushed the fuel hard lines? Were you going to break open the fuel distributor and restore o-rings and internals of that as well before restart?

Yes. Lines have been completely flushed. Every fuel component removed and replaced with new or rebuilt. The old FD was seized badly. I freed it up in prep for a rebuild but I have a good used unit I am going to use for start up.

This gas was nasty, the place that restored the tank told me it older than 25 years in their guess. It was last registered in 98 but I do have a receipt from a rebuilt turbo in 95. So we can guess it was running sometime around then.

I'm the owner of that white '80! Amazing driving dynamics with the 5 lug, disc brake suspension. Love this two tone turbo.

Good to hear from you ! I really like that car. I agree that the sport package really makes these cars. Even that slight increase in rear track width makes the rear wheels seem to fit the car better. I could always convert this car car using my 944 parts hoard but going to stay as original and correct as possible.
