Default Engine rebuilds are expensive!

Whoa!

I couldn't imagine how much this would be costing if I was paying someone for all the labor!!!

Anybody have any used, but still in-spec intake valves for sale??

$50/valve new isn't a pretty price...

That's on the cheaper end! You are doing good. Back when i still had my Mercury Cyclone 390 big block I was quoted in the neighborhood of 5k for complete engine rebuilt. And that's just on a non-exotic, home grown, low tech, bread and butter engine. Best way to save is to do as much possible on your own. Save money for new parts and machine work. Do your own engine removal, disassembly, reassembly, reeinstall and tune.

How much if I just do all the engine seals, all of 'em?

Did you try EBC for the intake valves? Seems to me the price is more like $20 per valve, not $50.

I guess I shouldn't complain about my Expedition engine rebuild ( 5.4 L ). I only had to replace the crank and 2 rods. I did replace every wear item on the bottom end ( all gaskets, timing chain, tensioners, oil pump, etc. ). At least the cylinder heads were fine. It cost around $ 1400 in parts, way too much time, and at least 3 layers of my skin You would think with as much room as there is in the damn engine bay, they could at least make it SLIGHTLY easier to get to some things. I plan on doing the 944 either next winter or the winter after that, although at 3k I might have to start buying some of the parts soon to spread the cost out.

Tom,

I've been back at school since January 19th...

Engineers dont write essays...not anymore anyway. Who becomes a scientist? The kid that failed english.

Re: $1600...your rebuild was only a top end wasn't it? This is the whole shabang...including ARP head studs and rod bolts, Cometic headgasket, every rubber piece on the engine, total seal rings, honing the block...etc etc...

Ha.. you are lucky it's an intake.. try $85 for OEM Exhaust valves, and I bent 5 of them.

Rebuilds are very expensive, especially when you have the "while I'm in there" attitude.

Oh.. sorry, no good intakes over here.
