I was an hour away from sealing a deal on a '91 C2 when the seller's remorse kicked in and he backed out. I had the bank check ready and was just waiting for the lunch hour to drive over and pick it up. That was over two years ago and I'm still pissed. I looked at some others, but the late-80's Carreras were too archaic, especially after having set my mind on a 964. I also looked at 968's, but we kind of covered that a few days ago. Decent coupes with 6-speeds were scarce, and overpriced. I even considered a 930 and a couple 928's, but most everything I found wasn't in the best of shape.
Ultimately, I knew a 951 wouldn't impress bystanders like any 911 would, but I made the decision to buy a car that made ME happy. Since I'd already had a 951 before, I was familiar with the car - and really missed it.
So in part, my answer is NO, I don't want any old 911 as opposed to my car. Sure, there are some I would rather have, but any non-turbo 911 pre-993 is not on my wish list. Esoteric early 70's race models and whatnot just don't fit my desires right now. 356's are different though. Would LOVE to have one!
Any time I've ever met an air-cooled guy that insists on telling me my car isn't a real porsche I'm done with him. Just makes me all the more happy I didn't buy a car to impress imbeciles like him.

A few years ago, I was at an autocross sponsored by the PCA and the VWCA. The 911 drivers there wouldn't even speak to you unless you drove a Porsche. It made me happy that the FTD was run in a '79 Rabbit.
It also explains why my dad stopped going to the PCA meetings...
Anywho, it was the 911 that started my love for Porsches. And yes, I started looking at 944s because I loved the brand and couldn't afford a 911. Since then, though, I've found that I prefer driving the 944 to the 911.
But still... there's something about the sound of that air-cooled flat-6 that the 944 will never have...
BB.

Alpenweissisnice, Marc and M Danger know what they're talking about. It's too easy to want what you don't have, rather than what you do.
Also I've been reading these boards and E-Mail lists for years and you'd be surprised at how many people like Marc "move on" to the 911 only to come back. Yeah, the 993 is a thoroughbred Porsche and all, but do I really want such an expensive single car when I can have several 944s which are just as much a Porsche in their own unique way?
I think we're too easily caught up in the 944's "pre classic" status. So what if people don't know it's a Porsche? I find that amusing and the cars aren't any less fun to drive because of it. Personally, I also dislike the stereotype often associated with "real" Porsche owners and would much rather show up in a 951 on my first date with a girl than in any 911.
So, to answer your question, read my sig. I already asked myself the same question 3 years ago, and my answer was "no." No regrets so far.

I've owned several 944's over the years and I love them. That being said I want something different. This spring I'll sell the 944 and a couple of motorcycles in the garage and shop for a 911. I'll keep the 951! I've narrowed it down to an '87 or newer Carerra coupe, though probably no newer than a '91. I reserve the right to change my mind and buy a 968 6 spd coupe if one catches my eye!

Ill prolly ADD a 930 or a 928, then I could say "Hmmmmm do I want to drive 4, 6 or 8 cyls today???"
As far as im concerned the 944 is as real as any Porsche. And theres prolly only one 930 id want, a 1989 5 spd drooool. Im not as fond of the newest ones.

For me personally there are enough different variations of the 924/944/968/928 to entertain me for a while. I just enjoy driving my underpowered 924S sooo much!!!
....Maybe one day i'd add a 911, but i doubt it would be my only porsche at that time, prolly just one of the many

Only way I could afford a new 911 would be a lottery win. If I had that much money I really think I would buy a 951S or 968 and put the savings towards my daughters college fund. If I was to get a rear engined Porsche it would be a 356B S-90. I don't want to mess with an air cooled flat six.

I mean who wouldnt want a 911? Id love to have a car who handling characteristics are far from well mannered as our 944 series cars....
But seriously Id love a 911....it gonna be that or a 951 or a boxster in a few years..but for now its my lil 944...and proud of it.

I really wouldn't want a 911, I'm happy with my 944, and most people said I couldn't afford one. If I could I probably still wouldn't buy one, well maybe. From what I've heard there not that great, and you have to "learn" how to drive it.

For me, it's about seat-of-the-pants driving. That being the case, new sports cars don't interest me. Beyond power steering, that's all the electronics I want. None of this PSM stuff. With a mere 53k on her clock, I'm keeping the 951 forever. Adding a daily driving Boxster would be a possibility, but if I could ever get away with 2 non-daily driving Porsches, I'd go for an '84-'89 911 but still keep the 951 obviously.

'compromise'??? bwahahaha
well, after PORSCHE designed the 924, they pulled it out of the fire because audi didn't want to produce it. so they produced it. great cars. all i am saying is that porsche didnt compromise by making cheap, watered-down crap, because even back then (and today) the 'cheap porsche(read: boxster)' is still somewhat expensive, a testament to the fact that porsche is no-compromise.

OK, I love the styling of 911, but am not sure if I could drive it well considering the rear engine location and the infamous happy-tail tendency.
I like telling myself I'm a great driver, but truthfully, I need to learn a lot (if you think you're great, than start racing, :-), and see if you dominate the event).
So for now, I prefer my 944.
