Best trigger wheel setups
Hi all
So I'm doing a rebuild on my 85 NA 944 and have decided to go the full aftermarket ECU route and install a Haltech 1500 elite. Mostly to teach myself about tuning and electronics, but also to modernise the driving experience and performance/economy. I really like these cars so would like to make it more daily friendly.
The Haltech can work with a number of trigger setups, but not the 944 style I would most like to modify the flywheel ie. Cut notches 36-1 or 60-2 etc. I found a machine shop that can do 36-1 for about $400
I'm thinking a Hall effect sensor, but I can't find information on how the teeth need to be shaped, how deep etc? Could anybody with experience chime in?

Hey I used to live in Toowomba! Down in Brisbane now though...
I'm interested to follow your experiences with getting the Haltech to work on a 944. My brother has a Sport 2000 in his R33 GTR and they seem to be a great unit.
Personally, I've got my eyes set on going to VEMS plug and play when I eventually have some cash to throw at the 944 again.

$40 and it bolts on. I run one with a basic Hall effect sensor on my 83. Only real work is making a mount for the sensor.

Yeah...Haltec seems great but I can't imagine the need for a high end EMS on a 944NA. My Megasquirt setup was $1200, including an all new harness, distributorless ignition, custom relay setup and wiring, new modern injectors, and all the sensors. It could be done for well under $800 without a lot of those extras.

Thanks all for the informative posts, I will investigate the S2 setup as that seems most straightforward. I do prefer to keep the setup on the bell housing for these very reasons
I was initially most interested in going the megasquirt way but didnt have the guts to jump in deep, I couldnt decipher the options or plan the combinations so I went with Haltech but hopefully it turns out ok and I will be more confident the second time around. It seems like overkill but I did it to get through a progress stall.
944 Crazy im actually in Brisbane now too, in Oxley, how about yourself? would be great to meet another local owner.
I'm not a fan of anything open to the elements and road debris and hanging at the front. I know a lot of people use such a trigger and sensor mount but I consider the stock flywheel and bell housing position a much more elegant and reliable solution. Apart from the S2 solution for an na, there is also a very good aftermarket 60-2 flywheel solution for the 951's.
