Default Casting the net... loooking for a decent 914

Hey all,

I've got a 914 itch that needs scratching. I'm looking for a decent 914, 2.0, 1973/1974/1975 (pre-smog B.S.).

All I can find is crap for $2K, or supposed "cherries" for $25K.

Where are all the mid-range ones? I'd like to spend in the approx. 7 to 10 range.

I missed out on a great one this weekend... one call too late.

Ideally, I want a nice bright color... blue, red, green, yellow, etc. Also, the "appearance package" would be great (chrome bumper, etc.)

Figured I'd cast the net out here in case any of you are thinking of selling or know of one that's not posted on line.

I'm in San Diego, so local is greatly preferred.

Thanks!

Thanks, SKL. I looked on 914world, Ebay, Craig's lists, general internet searches, car gurus, etc. Just can't find any other than "project cars" or ones that are way too expensive. I looked at one a few days ago, but it's a '76, and I want a 74/74 because of the smog issues in CA.

This one is nice. You might need to spend a bit more

1975 and earlier gets you out of the smog game.

Hal, that car does look very nice, but is quite a bit more than I want to spend, and is 3,000 miles away.

But, I really appreciate the link. That car is exactly what I'm looking for. I'm hoping that by casting the net I can find one a bit more in my price range.

I am sure you saw this listing from November. Asking 12.5k in SoCal. I am sure it is gone but good to see what you get for that price

Is this the kind of condition you are looking for? I paid several thousand more, but my car was a lot cleaner. My engine bay was very clean and had all new seals and lots of new stuff and working factory FI.

The underneath was also much cleaner with no surface rust and new brakes/calipers and new suspension stuff.

it was well worth it to me that have all this already done so I could mostly just drive and enjoy.

Even then, the tranny still turned out to need a bit of love (1st gear synchro).

This winter I had the dash pad refurbed and the seats redone with new foam and covers.

I am so happy and it is running great.

Signed up for first Auto-X in this car and can't wait

That one is pretty nice- not concours but a REALLY nice driver. Probably going to pay pretty close to that for a rust free car. Jan '13 BJ in Scottsdale had a decent big bumper 914 go for under 13K if I remember correctly. Was surprised it didn't go for more at an auction, but you never know who is going to show up.

This year at Bonhams in Scottsdale we watched a ratty "barn find" '66 911 go for over a 100K while a fully restored '67 911 went a few cars later for about the same. Wish I'd had a bidder's card...

If you're patient you'll find a nice one somewhere in Cali or the west... ask Eric Shea, he may know of one or have one...

Careful Mike, it's '74 and earlier are exempt. That could really suck to find a cherry '75 that won't pass.

Anyway, Riverside seems to be a hotbed for the 914 sect. You may want to call Precision Motion and see if they have any leads for you.

Hmmm... I'm pretty sure 1975 is exempt. Per DMV web site:

Does my vehicle qualify for a smog exemption?

Smog inspections are required unless your vehicle is:

Hybrid
Gasoline powered 1975 year model or older
https://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/smogfaq.htm

Doug, There was a great 914 for sale last week in Upland, not far from you. I Almost PM'd you to see if you could take a look at it. I left a call for the guy, but he didn't call back. So, I even drove up to Upland, then to Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear (figured it was a good day for a drive) last weekend, hoping he'd call while I was up there. Finally, he emailed me that the car was sold.

I'm not familiar with Precision Motion, but will give them a call.

Hal, yeah, I'm sure I would have come up with the $12.5 K for that one.... yes, that's what I'm looking for. I'm not looking for concourse quality, but I do want it to be a 6-incher, not a 10 footer.

{ah, I can already hear half of you saying "that's what she said"}

Interesting on the smog. You learned me something today.

....and Upland is about two minutes from my house. You should have warned me. There is a sweet white 914 I see running around all the time. It's got 5 lug hubs and lots of body mods. I could see myself in it.

Ask rusnak if his is for sale.

This one looks nice:

The 914 I was looking at in Upland was white... I wonder if the same car. The guy did an amazing rebuild on the motor, added brakes from a 911, all steel braided lines, etc. I'm still bummed out that I didn't get it.

That blue one does look good. The ad is pretty minimal, doesn't even say if it is a 2.0. It's 10 days old, but maybe I should look into it.

(Update: I just sent the seller an email.. let's see if I get a reply)
