It's alive!!!

The car started yesterday afternoon. It's idling a little high (around 1250 rpm's) but we're sorting that out. Broke in the cams at that idle yesterday- hopfully that's an OK speed for that to happen.

GHL headers and exhaust sound great. I hope to post video/audio of the car running soon.

We're getting a bit of black smoke on revving the car up to 3000 or so rpm's. My mechanic thinks that there might not be enough fuel pressure- another issue to sort out. Anyway it's been a long time coming, and it was really amazing to finally hear the car awake.

Here's a video of a startup. It was running very rich when this was recorded two days ago. It's running a lot better now. The timing has been advanced properly also. Please excuse the shakiness of the camera.

Sounds good! It's a nice phase of the rebuild effort to be on...

Default Fairly major setback

I guess it was all going too well.

When we fired the engine there was a faint ticking sound coming from the front of the engine. My mechanic determined that the sound was most likely caused by weak timing chain tensioners. Since we had come so far with the build, I didn't want the tensioners to be a weak link, so I asked my mechanic to switch them out for new ones.

He installed the new tensioners and cranked the motor. It made a racket apparently. I wasn't there to witness the event, but right away my mechanic knew there was a valvetrain issue.

The right (passenger) side tensioner didn't charge and the timing chain skipped. We have lost compression in cylinder #1. We should know this morning if it's "just" the rocker arm or the valve. If it's a rocker arm the engine stays in for replacement, if it's a valve(s) then the motor comes back out.

Autopsy is completed: All three right side exhaust valves bent- two rocker arms broken.

Worldpac is paying for the valves b/c their tensioner caused the carnage.

Sorry to hear this Jim!! I've been drooling on the key board as I've tracked your project. Like they say $h^t happens!

Good luck on the re-birth!

That sucks.

Was it a OEM part ?

I feel for you... and Worldpac. I was helping a friend get his long dormat SC up and running. In the process of going through the FI, I unknowingly dropped a nut in an intake port (it was getting late and I thought I dropped the nut on the floor under the car so I just grabbed another one ). I knew within a couple engine revolutions what had happened. Sure enough it bent the intake valve. My friend was pretty easing going about it. I ended taking the top end apart and replaced the Dilavar studs (5 were broken) in addition to the valve for nominal sum so he was happy when it was done. Unfortunately the car is back sitting in his garage not getting driven.

Yep, nine-three-zero part.

That's annoying.

Hope you get it back together soon.

Thanks for the kind words. Thought I would share some (bad) pics of the damage:

The three leaning towers:

Bottom of exhaust valve from #1 cylinder (the worst of the three):

One of the two broken rocker arms:

The oil that came out of the engine smelled heavily of gas. We were running way too much fuel.

The GT2 Evos looked to be wearing very evenly and nicely on a positive note. The pistons look fine.

I guess it could have been worse.
