Default Looking to buy my 1st 930!

Hi Guys!
I am another newbie addicted to Porsches! I am sure this topic has been repeated over and over again. You know someone has to bring it up again.
Well, I am celebrating my 30th birthday on Thursday(6/16) and I am treating myself to a 930. I am currently looking on Ebay and other traders.
My question is what is the best year on the 930's. I have read on differnet sites that the '78 to '79 models are the true monsters. Is this true? If so it is very hard to find them (in the U.S.). What would be another model range that would be worth owning?
Another question would be, what should I be expecting to break down or what would be the weekness or glitches of the 930? (Leaky heads, etc......)
Any info would be greatly appreciated!
I will make sure to post a pic once I get a car, hopefully next week!

Thank You,
Jose

Hi,
I treated myself to an 88 930 cabrio on my 33rd birthday 3 years ago. So far it has been nothing but bliss. Great car if you are a real driver. It is a jealous mistress and demands your utmost attention when driving her. Anyway, I would buy the newest one possible to avoid some repairs. I drive mine almost everyday. However, my mechanic chastised me for not driving it over longer distances. For example, my major tune up (every 15K ) required that he replace the rockers and shafts. Added about a grand to the tune up. (total 2 grand). It is not cheap, but if you factor the fun, the excellent quality, and lack of depreciation, paying 2 grand every couple of years for a tune up is a very good deal. For example, I could have bought a brand new Nissan Maxima for the same price as my 930 3 years ago (35K) Today that maxima is below 20 if not 15K. Thus, I saved over 20k -4k (tune ups) = 16K total over the maxima. I could sell it for the same price or more today. Furthermore, you could argue it is family car. The back seats were designed for kids and they love it. Buy one quickly, before those meat heads paying ridiculous prices for muscle cars figure out the value and beauty of these cars.

What he said!!! I guess my 930 was a 36th birthday present for myslef. I've always wanted a 911 and knew that if I just didn't go ahead and get a turbo, that I'd always have that lust in my heart for one. So I got the 930 to avoid buyer's remorse. I too like driving a car that has already incurred its depreciation. I drive it every day and I feel like I could sell it for what I've got in it at any time. They are not cheap to work on and if you settle for the wrong car, you could easily dump nearly half of the purchase price all over again for a new engine. In short, make sure you have a warm fuzzy feeling with whatever car you're looking at and then have a pre-purchase-inspection (PPI) done. Good luck!

Jeff

Aren't there issues with the rear ends in certain years?

Thanks,
Jose

A 930 does not have a "rear end" like a front engined Ford. The trans is in the rear of the car, and the diff is inside of the trans.

And I have heard that the trany in these things is VERY stout.

The 930 4 speed is very stout and can handle up to 700+ hp. It was really designed for the 934/935 race cars. The G50 trannys on the later air cooled cars are also just as strong.

I have to agree with Colin 101% on the transmission capable of handling upto 700bhp.

I think that Jose is talking about this the Rear Main Seal problem on 996/997 range of cars. Which does not apply to 930.

Sonny
