What is 79 930 turbo signature addition?
#107
I have the original certificate of ownership that I'm including as well that shows the sales date of July 1980.
From what I have read over the years, Porsche produced the chasis, but didn't assemble the cars in order of the serial numbers. 1150-1200 may not all be "the last 50 produced for the US market".

It would be very difficult to prove that 1151-1200 were not the last 50 produced unless a U.S. 930 prior to chassis number 1151 turns up with a 12/79 build date. Even the fact that a U.S. ’79 930 was built in 12/79 was unknown in any publication and the web until this Rennlist post. Information on the ’75-79 930’s is sparse. Andreas Gabriel published a new 911 turbo book and he mentioned on another Rennlist post that it was not possible to get data on the '75-79 930's from Porsche AG.
Maybe we can smoke out a few more of the last 50 to verify if your chassis number is the only one with a 12/79 build date.

1086 has a transmission #7791946 and 49-state engine #6890780 that is consistent with the chassis number and 11/79 build date.

9309801086 was featured in a 6-page article in the June 2012 Excellence Magazine and was in also for sale in an Aug 2012, eBay auction (Corvette Mike in California). In the Excellence article, there is a photo of the VIN decal with a build date of 11/79. The article mentions that this 930 arrived at Holbert Porsche-Audi in Warrington, Pennsylvania in early 1980.

Information overload! Earlier today we had a VIN that is 44 from the last but may really be the last with a previoiusly unknown 12/79 production date. Now there's a VIN that's 114 from the last that could be one of the last 50 or so with a build date of 11/79. I'd likely think someone in Germany was planning this for some time.

I was told by the long time manager at Holberts that when these final cars came in. The dealership lowered them and added another pipe to the muffler on the other side just to give the last ones something a little more special at the time.

That car used to belong to my good friend Larry. That was not the Holbert car but it came into the country at the same time as the Holbert car which was relayed to me as the last one. Larry's former car didnt come into the country until around Feb. 1980 and was sold to a top customer at Holberts. So I guess that may suggest that the 'last 50' may not have been the 'last 50' based on the 1086 vin.

Entry into the U.S., date on a certificate, etc. have no bearing on production date. 1189’s certificate, posted by Reed at the beginning of this thread, was not sold until April 1, 1981, but that tells us nothing about the 930’s engine/trans # or VIN decal date.
Unfortunately, there is a very high attrition rate for ’79 930’s as many been crashed or modified and this includes the last 50 chassis numbers. Hopefully, there are still more examples out there we can add to this thread.

kas930, on your webpage you have a photo of the inside of your door with the panel removed:
http://kas930.home.insightbb.com/tur.../doorpanel.htm
I’m wondering if the grease pencil number on your door (2797) is the production number verses the chassis number. There has been few threads on Pelican that discuss that Porsche added production numbers inside the door and under the dash, etc on early 911’s. Does anyone know if '79 930’s also have hidden production numbers?

I’m tempted to remove my door panel to see what number is on my car. Did you find any interesting graffiti when you removed your panels? It would be pretty cool if the Porsche workers left some hidden messages in addition to production numbers on some of the last 50, ’79 930’s.

For the 1979 930 the productions numbers were
ROW - 810
Japan - 22
U.S - 1190
Total - 2022
Is it possible that 2197 was the additive total production tub number if Porsche included the 1980 ROW and Japan 930 models that were running off the production line concurrently?

Looking at the number again, it looks like 2197 vs. 2797 (there’s only one German crossed seven in the four numbers).

Cool that you have a black headliner. It was a no-cost option for the ’79 930 but for some reason they were optioned less than the standard white headliner.

It's curious for sure. It would be intersting to see if any of the other signature cars have a number in that location.

There’s pretty good circumstantial evidence that you have the last 50 of 50. That being said, I think it would be just as cool to have Dave’s #1200 knowing that Porsche intentionally switched the chassis numbers around. We went from the last 50 ’79 930’s being a Volkswagen North America promotion to Porsche AG planning a chassis number switch for the last one. After all, when Ferry Porsche signed the certificates, the only implication was that the buyers had one of the last 50 USA production but not necessarily the last one.
