What is 79 930 turbo signature addition?

Rich,
I agree with the vin numbers of around 800 for the 85 mph. I seems the cars that I have seen with that vin range start to have the 85 mph speedo. The adjustable bezels happened a little later. There were some very late '79 930's that were in with the 1980 model U.S. 911's when they were being delivered, that would explain the adjustable bezels as that was on the 1980 cars. What vin is yours?

Here’s a reference from the Excellence Buyers Guide:
“The 1979 model was essentially the same car, and was the last Turbo brought into the U.S. in real numbers until 1986. Just 80 1980 models (built before 1980) snuck in.”

What are the “80” 1980 models that snuck in??

The adjustable headlight bezels came later in the production run. Notice it has the 85 mph and the smaller headlight washers.
The 1980 models were the late '79 builds that were the cars that I referenced earlier that came in to the U.S. when the 1980 models were already being delivered. That would explain the adjustable headlights as that was a change for the '80 models.
Of those 80, that included the "last 50".

Now that we have an idea of roughly when the adjustable headlight bezels came out and we have an idea of when the 85 mph speedo came out. I think the smaller headlight washers came out in the vin numbers of around the low to mid 600's. Mine has the larger washers and the vin is 544. I have seen them in the low 600's and then I have seen the smaller ones in the low to mid 600's. I must be obsessive to be paying attention to this stuff for all these years (:

A bit confused. When you say the late '79 builds are we talking Nov/Dec? Mine is Oct and I'm only 1012. Why would they build an 80's model when they were discontinuing it? Why wouldn't it have been a '79 that just came later? Does that mean they snuck into the country after Jan 1 of 1980? My car was built in Oct but didn't make it into the country until Dec 27th of 1979.
I wonder when the later '79's came into the USA if it took mine so long...or perhaps mine took longer for some other reason and was more of a anomoly.

Late builds could be from September-Dec '79. They were not building a 1980 930 model for the U.S. The cars were still 1979 runs that extended into the 1980 builds. I know of 1979 930 turbos that arrived at their dealers in early 1980. Some of them even stayed at the dealer for much longer as the dealers were asking big premiums for them because they were discontinued for the U.S.
A friend of mines late 1979 930 arrived in the U.S. in February 1980.

It was my understanding that #1200 was originally sold new at Hinsdale Porsche Audi - told to me by one of the old mechanics that worked prepping it for delivery. That dealership was sold to the Napleton family many years ago and no records exist , as far as I know. That's a great scene......
I did ask for any original documents that may've accompanied the car, and was told there were none. Not a deal-breaker, though - that thing was a hot rod, I was 25, and just wanted to drive.

Hey, thanks Dave. Been on the West Coast since '93, but born/raised Chicago and so do swing back by to check in on friends/fam. from time to time. Be cool to visit that rascal and meet the current caretaker - much appreciated!

My car, 1164, was delivered to Import Motors, Grand Rapids, Michigan on 1/25/80 to the late Peter C. Cook who was president of the company. The timing is interesting as the business relationship between VW and Import Motors ended on 1/31/80 (just 6 days after 1164 was delivered).

"Sloane, your dates for the late builds sound right but wouldn't the last be #1200 with a 11/79 production date (Sep-Nov 79 vs. Sep-Dec 79)? Here's an image of an early 1980 SC with a build date of 10/79."
Not necessarily, remember Porsche mixed the last vin numbers up on purpose. This was confirmed from several sources. A friend who has a late build, years ago contacted people at the factory and Bruce Anderson and confirmed this. I spoke with a veteran Porsche manager at Holberts and some people who used to be associated with Palm Porsche here in Florida and was told alot of the same info. Al Holbert supposedly had the very last one. It would make sense because obviously he was very tied into Porsche. I was told he actually received the last 5 cars, 4 went to top clients and the last to himself.
The latest build I have seen was 11/79 and that was for a car that I tried to buy #1177.

I never stated 1177 was built after 1200. I dont know if 1177 was built after 1200. I dont know what the sequence was. I just know that several reliable, reputable, people associated with Porsche have through the years confirmed the same story about the vins. If you want drop me a pm and I will put you in touch with my friend who did some research into this. He actually contacted Jurgen Barth when he was at the factory to find out what he could. He also heard this from Porsche author Bruce Anderson.

Sloane,
Sorry I mixed up 1177 with the car you mentioned that was specially built for Al Holbert. It does make sense that a special “Paint to Sample” in Albert Blue may have taken a detour off the assembly line with respect to VIN and production date. It would be interesting to know the VIN of that special order car.
Here’s a link to the Modesto Bee, Feb 15, 1980 that discusses the “Last 50” Porsche 930s.
