Hey everyone, I just joined. I emailed a current member to ask where to post this thread, I wanted to make sure it was in the correct location.

I'm looking at a 2005 Porsche 911 Carerra S Coupe.

60,000 miles

I called the dealer, and they will let me drive the car off the lot for $38,500

That price INCLUDES TTL.

What do you girls and guys think of it ? Is that a fair price? I tried to reason as much as I could on the price but that's as low as they will go.

This car is gonna be my daily driver, I have a truck for a back up. How reliable do you think it will be ? I've been researching 911's and on one forum they had a daily driver thread and there were people driving 80s and 90s model 911's daily, in all kinds of weather.

How about maintenance ? Can I change the oil myself? What about if the clutch goes out ? Does the motor have to be removed ? It seems pretty tight in the engine bay.

I'm a back yard mechanic (that means I'm self taught, and am not a mechanic for a living).

I just want to make sure before I purchase the car, I don't have any HUGE fees for maintenance or replacement parts.

Also, I can post a link to the car on craigslist, but I don't want anyone to think I am a spammer since this is my first post.

Would love to hear everyone's opinion.

dont worry about it, just leave it here for when you buy the 997 and realize you just bought a Camry. you'll be back

Get the build date. Major change to the IMS/bearing was made in '05. You have to get the dealer to tell you if the car, by VIN, has a small IMS bearing, or a large, fully contained bearing. If it has the small bearing, documentation that proves the bearing has been replaced must be available to you. Oil change records are also crucial.

Thanks guys. I'll have to see if I can find out about this stuff. This isn't a Porsche dealer, its a used car dealer. They seem to have nice cars on the lot though.

So yea, my only concern is maintenance on the car and costs, and if I can do most of it myself.

I was on Pelican just now and read some tech articles but I was reading 911 articles. I didn't realize the 05 911 was actually a 997. Oops.

What year Porsche or 911 would you recommend ? I like the 80s all the way up to the new ones, which are out of my price range. Haha

I'm also looking at a Viper RT/10 and a WRX STI.

What ever car I get I wanna be able to work on it myself. The Viper you can do your own repairs, the WRX I'm not 100% sure about.

Any suggestions ?

Air cooled 911s don't require a computer to work on them. A 964 will require a Bosch Hammer or Durametric to do some work, a 993 will require them for sure.

I checked Wikipedia, if I'm correct, the 911 3.2 Carrera is 84-89 right ?

Correct! '85 & up had sport seats as standard and a radio antenna in the windshield. '87-'89 had a Borg-Warner G50 transmission with a hydraulic clutch. I don't mind the 915 gearbox...I'd get a nice '85 or '86 if I was in your position. Get one with a service history and no accident damage. Should set you back around $25k for a nice car.
