Original guards red paint after a professional detail. The PO didn't take the best of care with the paint. There were many white oxidized paint patches when I first took ownership.

From this (left abandoned in Maryland for years in a driveway):

To this (after hours of hand rubbing):

All of what you see is original paint.

Oh, it's far too clean to drive. I just push it around the driveway making "vroom" noises. Keeps the mileage low and the valve guides fresh too.

MrBonus,

Thanks for the compliments. The paint is horrendous up close due to what I think was the car staying outside for at least 5-7 years from what I was told. The elements took their toll...but Porsche paint is pretty robust.

Your car's color (and car!) is fantastic. My (soon to be someone elses) 964 is Baltic Blue (and original).

I have a Guards Red 1986 with original paint and would like to bring it back to what it could be. What should I use to end with the results shown above? Thanks, Curt

I don't know if you are asking me because of my before and after pictures but I will respond. Some people like to do it themselves and you certainly can with the right tools. Red is the easiest color to bring back from the dead. I would clay the paint to remove all the crap and impurities that build up over time. Then, you start polishing the paint with different types of compounds until she is gleaming. Finally the wax. I like Griot's Garage because they provide good advice on how to use their products. Many will say they are overpriced but I appreciate the time they take to educate you on how to properly use their products. That being said, I only paid $160 for my professional exterior detail and that included a $35 tip.

Good luck.

I agree with MM's assessment as to how to bring back the paint and with the recommendation for Griot's products and processes. Start with the least agressive product you can to see how the paint responds. Move up the chain if you do not see any progress.

You essentially have to remove a layer of paint (either single stage or clear coat) to get the shine back.
