After a weekend of autocross school its time to change pads. The car is a stock 83SC that is used as a daily driver. I will be doing some additional
auto-x and a drivers-ed later this summer and would like opiniuns on a good pad for 95% street
5% track. Good intial bite cold is important.

For street only I liked Metal Masters. They're cheap, quiet, long wearing, and almost dustless. I autox about 10 times a year and do about 4 DEs. I now keep Performance Friction 90 compound pads on the car. I also have PF Z compound pads (street/track), but they don't provide the torque I've come to like. For track many people also seem to like Pagid Orange compound. The track pads need to get warm for maximum torque, but even the first application from cold seems to me to provide just as much slowing as the street pads do. I just have to try to remember that the first application during an autox will not bring maximum slowing. I've killed several cones by forgetting about that.
Although maybe only about 5% of my driving is autox or track too, I figure those are very important applications to have good breaking for.
I'll probably never go back to street only pads.

Here's a link to the same question, as posed on the pelican board. And, my two cents...I think Ferodo in the DS2000 compound is great stuff!

I use the Performance Friction pads as well. The PO of my car spent over 10 years on the track w/ the car and tried just about every pad available. He liked the Pagid Orange pads, but said they weren't exactly rotor friendly and since you want a street/autoX/track pad, they wouldn't be good for you. He settled on the PF pads since they offer a good initial cold bite that only seems to improve w/ heat! I autoX ~10 times/yr. and I hope to get to the track about the same. The pads do make a little noise on the street, but it is nothing unbearable. The only down side to these pads is they do dust a bit, but I feel it's worth it for the excellent hot/cold performance!

Thanks for the responses. Im off to Pelican to order pads. Have not decided between PF or Mintex.
Either way they should be more than enough. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

I talked to Pelican this afternoon on this very subject. Their recommendation was to stay away from Minex (spongy feel) and go with Metal Masters or Ferodo (if you can find them). Ordered the Ferodo's from Performance at their sale price.

After your first DE or so I think it makes sense to switch to track pads and keep the track pads for the street. Since you bleed your brakes before and after each event (right!?) changing pads isnt really that much more work. This is overkill for your first few DE's, while you are learning car control and threshold braking, I think it is the only way to go once you have a little experience under your belt.
Have fun!

I used the Ferodos (from P.P.) with new slotted rotors (at all 4 crns) at the Las Vegas AX (PCA) with very pleasing results. Issues like dust I am still monitoring. Noise is not a problem.

FWIW, I run Pagid Orange for street and track. They don't give off dust, seem to be more rotor friendly than others, and really do a nice job on the track. They also work well when cold which is surprising. The only drawback is that they are NOISY, but I just ignore it.
