Default My "new" '86 Carrera 3.2

Hey everyone, here's a few pics of my 1986 Carrera that I recently picked up. This is my first 911, coming from a '02 WRX and an '84 944 before that. After a few months of searching and driving all over Florida looking for the right car, I found her locally for $17k.

Yesterday I got her cleaned and waxed and polished up to make her presentable to you guys. Pics here
/
She has 96k original miles and came with service records back to 1990 or so, all from the Tampa area, showing a more "recent" history of everything from new struts to a new rack and pinion, new A/C compressor and lines converted to 134, valve adj, and even a new clutch and tranny rebuild @79k.

Hopefully today I can find the time to take apart the shifter and try to figure out what kind of short shifter has been put in here because it just shifts so quick from gear to gear, up or down, it just wants to notch into the next gear tightly. It feels much more intuitive than a previous 915 transmission I had test driven without a short shifter. Still though I've already chirped R just barely when coming out of 5 a few times because it comes out so tight and so I'm thinking of installing a Seine gate shift kit to help with that. I am kind of liking not having a spring on 1-2 though... I'm also thinking about maybe a Fabspeed muffler and catbypass with a SW chip in the future.

congrads!

**the aggressive shifting may be that it has a sport clutch which is much more aggressive going into gear. when i purchased my sc it had the sport clutch that i replaced when i had my tranny rebuilt this past spring. totally different feel - much smoother when letting the clutch out.

your car would look even better w/the european H4 headlights. not vey expensive and headlitght trim rings can be painted to match the black body color. black is an easy match.

Looks good, and the spring going into the 1-2 plane is the most important one.

Very beautiful car, but I'm biased as I have a black/black 85. You mentioned Fabspeed exhaust, we're on the same page but I went a slightly different way, I just installed a Fabspeed muffler bypass. I kept the cat, which may seem weird, but it's my small give for the environment, and plus the stock cat does muffle the sound some. I love it so far.

WOW - sharp!

as for the shifting issue...Seine is a great system but wont help your nicking R coming out of 5
coupler adjustment or re-fresh is your best option...and check out this web site called "the coupler whisperer" do a google/bing search....that guy offers a great product

your brake pedal looks kinda high too? they are adjustable

and at thor next "wheels off" service, rotate the points on the center caps to point to the valve stems...you'll look more like a neat freak to the rest of the guys who already do this and get their undies in a bunch when they see a car with them not aligned

go drive it...you are 100k miles behind me.....go drive it!

Those Euro H4's do look nice! But the paint looks so nice right now with all of the polished chrome that I'm ok waiting on any cosmetic mods until after I get that exhaust and chip because the stock muffler is way to tame sounding.

KC Chief, do you get droning from that muffler bypass? I would expect so and I don't want any droning because I've been dealing with that for years on my last car. Fabspeed claims their maxflo muffler doesn't drone and it has a nice sound in their videos so I'm thinking about that one.

I went ahead and ordered the Seine gateshift kit from Pelican and I got a bushings kit too so I can replace all the bushings while I'm in there. I haven't chirped R again, I just needed to pause for a sec when popping it out of 5 and let it hit neutral, then pull back. Driver adjustment worked. Ed, Finding 1-2-3-4 has been a piece of cake so that's why I'm wary of adding a spring on the 1-2, I thought I had better do it before I get to used to not having though.

As for my brake pedal being high, yeah it is. And now that someone else said something I'm realizing just how high it is. I'll have to figure out how to adjust that, it's sticking out much further than the clutch pedal...

I don't have any droning. The sound is quite easy to control, quiet when I want it, or stomp on it and let it bark. I should caveate that by saying my other car is a big block chevelle with flowmasters, so the 911 sounds very quiet to me. I have had NO complaints from wife, friends, or my 3 daughters. My option costs less, so you could try it and change it if you like.

I too purchased a Seine and bushing kit, man I hope it helps.

The thing is, if you are driving in earnest, at some point, you stand the risk of pulling the lever into 2nd instead of 4th.

Anyone recommending adjusting your brake pedal online should have also cautioned you that you don't want it lower than the clutch. Any adjustment needs to be done carefully, including fully depressing your pedal, as in a panic stop, to make sure your foot and everything else allows you to stand on the brake. Look it over carefully.
