Instigator!

Sheesh, I'm tempted to buy a 996 like "someone else" I know, and make a homemade 6-GT3 (streetable). I could bring that in a whole lot cheaper than the real thing, and it would be more fun!

But, I'm looking for a cruiser....

There is a world of difference between a 996 and GT3 - at least under the deck lid.

There is no doubt about that.

You can offset HP with weight reduction (more fun stripping down a cheap 996), and there are some ways to deal with improving the oiling on the stock motor. I'm not sure I have the time or motivation to do such a project, however. And, I've already got the hot rod.

I'm feeling you Ed. One thing I'm going to assume here: this is a qualitative pursuit...not numbers. otherwise you would go get a viper/cobra/vette etc. Fit/finish /feel are big on your list. The 993 will probably score points on this level. The later cars have a different "feel" and I will just leave it at that.
yea, the numbers are there, and I could get enthusiastic about all the options(it's fun to think about), but this reward should be rewarding on all levels for you. A warmed over 996 puts you in a boxster S, Cayman S state of mind. I can't help but think that you are looking a little deeper. Again, I am making an assumption, and my objective is to enjoy this really nice discussion. My opinions are worthless and not intended, or directed, to be contrary to your wishes.

Your pretty close there whale. Heck, I've even considered building a Factory Five Daytona Coupe. For $40 or 50K, you could probably have a 3.5 seconds to 60 car, that could make turns pretty well too.

Sure, but weekend trips? How about a Ford GT. I know they are over the top $$$, but damn thats a sexy car that can really do it all.

I agree, there are some other great choices. It's hard to argue the P-car price/performance/dependability equation, though.

yeppers. Porsche is a total package. Even an understudy within the marque is (obviously) choice-laden.
A GT3 stands proud amongst its bretheren with the same sheetmetal. It's bones are different, and that satisfies on a number of different levels. The 993 option is yet again...qualitative. For me, I just like the door-window frames, and the sound of the doors. Can a GT3 satisfy the intangibles?

Get a lightly used Z06 and do some bolt-ons.

Ha...that suggestion has merit. This discussion is an address to the "art" of motoring, I would say a nice "big" healey3000 MK3 is a strong car. Arguably stronger than a vette in artistry. We all have our opinions. Ed, I hear Raul Welt-sian is in town...a rare opp indeed.

No, I know. I just don't see me in a modern Vette, in this lifetime. And yes, I've read all of the road tests and reviews and comments about "bang for the buck".
