Good jackstands are important to Porsche maintenance! Excellent tip--Pete.

another safety tip. unless they are in the way of what I am doing, I tend to lay my wheels under the car or ramps under the wheels if they are not off. something else to stop the car if a jack stand should fail or hard wrenching tips them over. I am sure there are other ideas to improve safety.

too many sad stories out there of people who got pancaked.

be safe ... have fun.

regarding having fun. recently when working on my 928 I needed to drain 'just a little' coolant to remove the top hose. in the process I ened up laying in a pool of about 1/2 gal when I could not get the drain plug back in fast enough. as I lay there I kept saying to myself, "remember Bob, you are having fun... you are having fun."

If I had a lift, I'd never leave the garage.

My wife will attest to the fact I don't on weekends. Big screen HD, surround sound, Sirius, A/C also help. Plus, it is a cigar friendly environment.

I know it sounds cliche, but your garage can make a grown man cry, Ed.

Wow, that's pretty scary. I might want to convert my jackstands to accept a safety bolt to prevent that sort of collapse.

It brings me back to my post in this thread about filing the teeth and cleaning away the paint to allow the teeth to solidly engage the ratchet.
https://rennlist.com/forums/911-foru...uld-i-get.html

Look at the jackstands though. Those ratchet teeth are rounded, not very deep, and the catch only has a small area to register into and engage.

This is unrelated, but notice the safety tab is not even bent in. The poor guy used the jackstands right out of the box, not even questioning the safety of their use.

Thanks rusnak. I do remember many years of working in driveways and carports, so I am thankful for what I have now. Having said that, I'm still pretty low on the foodchain-i've been in some phenomonal facilities of others.

But when it comes down to it, as posted above, safety should be at the top of everyone's list-before the other trappings.

The Esco stands that can be obtained from a 993 Rennlister's thread are the best jack stands I have ever owned. Never skimp on that stuff.

To the comment in that 914world posting, it is over before you even know it happened. a bit like you will not hear the bullit that kills you.

to qualify my previous post. using tires under the car may avoid getting killed but still leave you exposed to what the 914 guy suffered.

you can never have enough backup. I never work under my car without at least two kinds of support on each corner. a jack stand and a jack, or two jack stands, or jackstand and tire ramp, etc etc.

my wife asked my why I hve 4 pair of jack stands, but is always asking if I am safe. I don't think I'll show her that pic.

now off the the garage and check the ratchets on my jackstands and start filling away at any deficiencies.

this question may sound insane, considering all the discusion about safety, but.

does anyone know of a safe way to have jackstands on rollers? I saw an add in Harbor frieght for the wheel dollies that got me thinking. I also think there is anohter version of those that lift to move the car then let down on the floor again for stability.

one of the problems of putting either of my cars on stands to do any extened work is having adequate clearance on both sides. I pull my wife's car out of the garage when working so that side is not an issue. but if I position the car on stands to leave good space on the wall side it is infriging on the center line and limits the space for her car's ingress/egress.

I suspect this idea/question IS INSANE. but asking is not hazardous ... well maybe from flaming replies!.

The guy pictured above is not from a jack issue. The guy crashed on his bicycle and posted his pic in the thread.

The difference between a wheel dolly and a mobile jackstand:

Hit a concrete seam with dolly That stops you as you push, you curse, backup a bit and try again. Hit the seam on a mobile jackstand, the thing tips over and your car and/or you may get hurt.
