Default How To: Jacking up a 997 safely, securely

The question comes up periodically--how do you jack up a 997 and support it by the four jack points AND get your floor jack out of there?

Here's the steps I use. To put it back on the ground I simply reverse the procedure. To drop the car to the ground and have the jacks removed takes me 3 minutes. Safely is never compromised, and the car is very secured and never damaged. I always use hockey pucks (99¢ each) to protect the pads.

Here's a little more detail in WHERE I'm placing the lift in the rear. Sorry for the fuzzy shot on the left.

Dan i'm not clear about the suspension point in the rear you're using. Is it the motor cross brace or the inside knuckle of the lower control arm? Regardless it's much safer than using the motor and stressing the motor mounts....

Good stuff, Dan! Which brand and model of floor jack and jackstands do you use?

Thanks,
John

I'll agree.. the exact location of where the suspension jack points are is not clear from the photos. It may be obvious once you've used them once, but if you've never jacked up the car there, its not clear.

note also the use of a hockey puck between the jack and the car - particularly for the suspension point lifting this is probably most important.

See the 2 extra photos I have added--simply blowing up the earlier ones. It's where the stabilizer bar is secured to the suspension.

Check my avatar for the easiest way. All you need is a 16 bay shop and four hockey pucks.

I would also like to know the brand of jackstands. I use hockey pucks on my floor jack but I have not seen and jackstands with pads to place a puck on top.

Great description Dan. Actually all we really want to know is where you find hockey pucks in SoCal, eh?

Once the car is on two stands, to do the other side do you need a low-profile floor jack? Can you say what the clearance is to get the jack in to the pad? Thanks.

The jackstands are like $100 each, I've seen them online and they're perfect for Porsche because they aren't grooved out at the top.

Super sturdy too, I know many have upgraded to them after member here had regular stands fail and the car fell on him.

I don't have to resort to any sort of fancy low-profile floor jack. These are just conventional Sears Craftsmans.

Jackstands. I sourced these in the photos through a guy on Rennlist--993 Forum. Much to be found and learned on the other forums. They are the best stands I have ever owned. I loan out my others!

I buy hockey pucks whenever I'm in the north country--Minnesota, Jackson Hole, etc. There are sporting goods stores in large cities that support hockey.
