Default 3.2 exhaust system suggestions

The 88 I just purchased has an exhaust system with jet coated headers and some type of muffler. I have not found a brand name on it. The car runs great but between 2500 and 3000 rpm it has a really BAD resonance in the car. After 3000 rpm it really sounds great. The bottom line is that it is just to loud for me. What system would give me good performance without the resonance and quieter overall?

I agree that the stock exhaust is quiet and resonant free.

I have a Dansk pre-muffler and a Dansk Sport muffler on my '84 coupe. It has a nice deep, throaty sound to it and does not have any resonance at any rpms. It is not too loud either and is easy on the ears for a daily driver type car.

I've heard very good things about the Monty system too.

I had a Monty dual-in (for SSI), single-out muffler on my car for 6 years. Sounded good and no resonance. I recently switched over to a dual-out M&K cause I wanted something louder

Pre-muffler and a GHL exhaust. Great sound, no resonance.

Like Jay H I have the Dansk pre muffler and Dansk sport muffler on my 84 coupe. Nice deep sound and very important no resonance at any rpm. Easy to hold a conversation in the car but a great sound. I didn't notice or expect any performance changes.

Cheap solution: get a removeable cap for one of the two outlets (first confirm that the muffler uses a common chamber for both outlets -- most do). Take it off for the times you want to be loud.

Alternately, you can reduce the outlet diameters and 'tune' out the resonance.

Cheap solution...that's me! I think I'll try tuning it out before I spend a lot of money. The system I have looks almost brand new. Sounds like my kind of weekend project. Now all I need is a weekend to do it!

Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.

I'll post back in a week or 2 after I get a chance to make something!

Dan.

stock is the way to go imho....

this is one of the few cars made whose pure engine noise is so sublime that I'd hate to subdue it with a loud exhaust

That statement is hard to argue with.

Are you talking any 3.2L or just the 88?

A stock 3.2 carrera sounds like a toyota. Just a regular single out sport dansk or MK Exhaust will kill the resonance and make a throatier - less toyota camry sound.

Sorry to all you purists - but after having a 964 the first thing i did is switch out the stock exhaust on my 3.2.

I'm a big time purist and won't even take out the horrendous stock audio equipment out of my '84 coupe and '90 coupe. However, the Dansk system on my '84 is fantastic to get my 3.2 just a touch more throaty and without covering up the fan noise and valve train noises that we all love. I've got a stock Carrera muffler and cat, but refuse to remove the Dansk system. After getting this car in May with the Dansk system on it, I thought I'd swap out the Dansk immediately for the stock system, but I like the Dansk better.

However, I have no problem with people leaving their exhaust stock. It's a good system from the factory.

I still maintain that the 3.6 liter and it's particular exhaust system in the 964 (and only in the 964) is the best sounding Porsche 911 exhaust sound yet of the modern 911's.

No matter what you choose, this is a good discussion on what people enjoy on their car.

I'm sorry, but the stock exhaust system in the 80's Carreras is a terrible design which chokes both exhaust streams into a single constricted flow. Horsepower robbing effect, which is wht so many owners backdate their cars into the 74 or earlier exhaust (dual-in).

Find a muffler with single out (like a GHL 2/1) and keep those headers.
