Default first ride in a 930

i know this is the forum for n/a 911's, but a friend of mine recently bought an 88 930 cab....pic attached. took a ride with him last night....man that thing was sick fast!

i don't know how you run it through corners on anywhere but a course. things were coming at us so fast through the windsheild it was like a strobe light or something!

if these later ones were more progressive with the boost, then i really can't imagine taking an early one down a twisty road without a healthy respect for who is really the boss. actually sounds less fun than my regular ol' 3.2....

i guess that's what my point is, but for sure it was another awesome experience for someone new to the marque...

Turbos are fast to be sure. However, always seems a bit faster from the passanger seat.

I have heard a lot of people comment on how fast the 930's are. I wonder how fast they feel compared to the modern turbo cars? I know that the 993 and 996 turbos have more hp than the 930, but they also have more weight. I am curious if the reduced weight of the 930's combined with different gearing and what not make them feel quicker even though they are not actually faster than the modern cars.

I don't feel like my 911 is "fast", but my 996 IS fast. Is it the same for the turbo versions???

The newer cars are definately much faster even taking the added weight into account when looking at hp/lb calcs. Plus there are other factors like extra tranny gears, variocam, and ability to put more torque to the pavement (AWD, PSM, wider tires, better aerodynamics, etc.).

But 930 cabs are wonderfull cars, and I am considering one as a stable mate for my 996TT.

i think this one has a few mods but i would definitely say the light weight added to the sensation. i've never ridden in a new turbo either....bet that's impressive too

Weeeeeeeee!!!!! The 930 is a hoot. Had one for 7 years but in the end had to compromise with the other half and traded for a 993 Tip (held on to my old '76 2.7 Sporto thought!). The 930 feels fast because of the turbo lag which is much less noticable with the 993 and 996 turbos which have much more grunt lower down with a smoother power band. They are much more civilised but the 930 is a car you dream about, a real muscle car (you need plenty of muscle to heave it around at low speeds).

The problem as I understand it, is that the 930's were somewhat underbraked, making it, so I'm told, a more "dangerous" car to drive. At least that's what a knowledgeable friend of mine told me when I was entertaining the idea of buying a 1977 3.3...but the thing was ( still is as I see it often ) a beauty...

The '77 was underbraked but in the following years with the factory addition of 917 type brakes to the 930's that problem was eliminated.

Well I would like to add that I feel my 78 SC is thoroughly more over braked than the 77 turbo .. hey there are two ways to look at everything right..

I understand what your saying. My first ride in a 930 turbo was a blast. I love (most seem to dislike) the turbo lag. I love the feeling like I am being shot off an aircraft carrier. The pushback in the seat. To me it was more like an amusment ride......for a split second. I love it.

My first ride in a 930 was in Kelly Marsh's gold 1978 (I think that was the vintage) about 25 years ago. It probably had some upgrades. He also had a very nicely set up Carrera RS which he took me out in as well.

Kelly's family was close friends with Bob Bondurant so Bob trained him personally. Kelly drove for his family's Mazda (IMSA) racing team back then. Anyway, Kelly made sure I was taking the whole ride white-knuckled. It took a while to catch my breath but it was some ride. Thanks again Kelly.

Did some research on Kelly. His team took 16th overall and 3rd in GTO in the 1988 24 Hours of Daytona and 19th overall and 6th in GTO in 1987. Check out some of the other names in those races:

Back in 1994, I drove a RUF enhanced 1987 930. Not much happened until about 3000 rpms and then it was like being hit by a freight train from behind. My God did that car pull...

I have a 88 turbo CAB and the day I drove it home, I thought the turbo was out. I met the car hauler and drove the car home sixty miles. I shifted around 3200 rpm's and thought "What the hell?" The next day I changed the oil and aired up the tires. A buddy of mine told me to let the car warm up and shift under 3000 until the car reaches op temp. Then shift around 5-5,500 rpm.

Well, I did and holy cow. The car is a dream to drive, but the lag is somewhat more than anyone can believe. Nothing, zero, zilch, nada happens below 3500 rpm's. My 10year old son can beat me off the line in his Schwinn, but when you hit that magic number, boom goes the dynamite.

Now, a seasoned 930 owner, I can tell you corners do come quickly and my front tires will lock, rather quickly, under any hard breaking with steering movements. You must hard brake in a straight line and never, never let out of the pedal on high speed cornering (as you 911 guys know), but the 930 has more weight in the rear and will slide out quickly. I took the car in a vacant parking lot and forced the rear to slide out from the car. There is a feeling you get just before the event and it is scary feeling it during hard road driving, tyou must stay on the throttle and pray you don't meet a curb, Fuch's do not like greeting curbs.
Now taking a corner in first gear and goosing it around the apex will kick out the rear (in a totally controlled feeling) and looks impressive from behind the car.

The way the power is delivered in my 5sp '89 is one of things I enjoy most about my 930. It's stock so it's only 282 hp, much like my previous 993 C4S at 285hp. I don't find the "on/off switch" turbo sensation many describe. Power is decent off line then the turbo boost builds starting around 3500 rpm or so and continues to build until I shift at 5500 or so. It's quite different than my 993 which had more torque down low (but not significantly) then felt more linear after that. For the street-type driving I do I really enjoy the way the 930's power comes on through the gears.

It's also less refined than my 993 -- still comfortable but more mechanical and I like that. The shifter has a precise, mechanical snick snick to it I really enjoy and the motor makes wonderful sounds (which is good because the radio sucks). The unassisted steering is very communicative with lots of feel but you have to muscle it around slow street corners. Compared to my 993 the torsion bar suspension is much louder over bumps but the ride of the car on its Bilstein HDs is just right.

It's a great car. Old enough to be noticeably different from newer cars, but new enough to still be reliable and comfortable (at least now that I have upgraded the A/C). For my good weather toy, it delivers the grins.

There are many things to enjoy besides being fast. My Ducati 916 is scary fast, but I don't enjoy it as much the 911SC because it is impossible to relax on it. What a feast for the eyes and ears, though...
