81 SC Targa Price Check
Dark Green w/Black interior
82K miles
$18,900
AC blew cold, heat, venting & defrosters all seemed to work ok
I drove it today - interior looks good, minor clean-up needed.
The throttle seemed to have a little play before it was 'tight' - is this normal?
Paint is OK... basic road rash on nose
Decklid and hood open and close smoothly, doors as well.
Car pulled OK in all gears - shifted fine - sales guy is going to find maint history (he said he would anyhow) so not sure about any upgrades. Acceleration wasn't as strong as I expected it to be, but I was shifting well below redline (shifting at 3K-4K rpm) as I wasn't familiar with the car and was trying to take everything in in one sitting. I'm also no expert and wasn't 100% sure what to expect.
Steering was tight and responsive.
It's at a highline (non-marque specific) dealership in Raleigh - "Olde Raleigh Motors" - which has an OK reputation.
They are asking $18,900 for it and that seemed quite high.
NADA Classic Cars had:
Low: $12,800
Average: $14,550
High: $19,500
I'm not sure how "in-line" these prices are.
Thanks for any light anyone can shed on the pricing...

US or Euro?
Carrera Tensioners?
Would have to have the records to get that price IMO.
3-4k shifts are not going to snap your neck, this motor likes to be revved to feel the power! (so that sounds normal to me) Shifet smooth, that's a PLUS!
I think my 84 with 80k would be a better deal (lol) at $17.5k...
what do you think he will really take for it, I know you want a Targa!
Did you get a pic? one of the motor?

At $18.9K, the car should be very, very good. Better than what you describe. Subtract $4 - 5K (the dealer's profit margin by the way) and you'd be about right.

FYI: Just bought a 69k miles '83SC Coupe for 16k. Good color combo and stock except for C tensioners, steering wheel, stereo. Needs a tune-up. Body/paint in very good condition. Interior is excellent. Probably paid a little premium for lower miles.

I agree...too high, especially for the area (+ dealer mark-up). When I was looking here in CA, targas were in the range of 10-15k depending on condition AND there were A LOT of them! $18.9k is definitely too high.

check this out... https://rennlist.com/forums/911-forum/190239-very-reliable-driver-track-82-sc.html this sounds like a much better deal even if you have to ship it across the country

Three Wheelin'
Last May, I (very sadly) sold my truly pristine and original '81 SC Coupe with 68K miles for $18K. The only thing it needed was an AC recharge (a charge lasted for the summer). The car sold in 3 weeks (listed on rennlist only), and got a LOT of interest.

It seems WAY high to me!!!!
I just bought ( I am talking the last week of April) a 1982 Targa for $11350 of E-bay. It set me back another $1500 for shipping, so make that $12850. The car is excellent. Is it pristine? No. Of course not. But it is a very solid car for the money. Not an drop of rust and its in the original paint. Interior is 8 of 10 with new carpets. The engine pulls hard, starts right up, and when warm idles nicely around 900 rpm. I have put the car through the ringer and its solid.
Pictures here, you be the judge:

My point is, unless the car is PRISTINE, that is way high. I researched this to death (ask my wife, I drove her nuts). NADA values seem to be there to benefit one group.....THE DEALERS. If you look on E-bay, cars.com and the local papers, you can find very solid cars being sold by individuals. Just my humble opinion, but I think buying classic cars from dealers if for suckers. You know damn well they got if from someone for $5000 less than they are selling for.
