Post Why would I want a 911?

I posted here earlier regarding my interest in an earlier midel 911 (1982-1987). I limited it to these model years strictly for financial reasons as I probably could not afford to go more than $18,000 or so. So my question is this: Why would I want one over my 1988 944 Turbo S? My car is quicker 0-60, faster top speed, a better handler (I know that one is a little arguable but I would not be as worried about swapping ends in a 951), and likely cheaper to maintain and repair. I also, for the same money, purchased a showroom condition car with 38,000 miles on the clock whereas I would end up with a relatively high mileage "decent" condtion 911.

This is NOT meant to slam the 911. I really would like to know what the advantages to owning an SC or Carrera over that of the 951. I know some will say looks or the sound of the flat six, but I'm looking for something a little more concrete. I truly admire the 911 and aspire to own one someday soon but am seriously weighing the pros and cons.

I don't buy into the "real" Porsche line of thinking but a part of me really sometimes feels like a 911 would scratch the itch that I have.

Any comments?

Get your hands on a prospective purchase 911 "on concrete" (& asphalt). Drive it until its distinct nature becomes clear to you. I believe that is all you need to do to answer your (good) question.

I think the Porsche Poster that was out in the 1990's sums it up best..."Its like children, you can't understand until you've had one"

This is so true... but being a 944/951 convert I can give you other reasons:

1.) a 944 blends in with most other cars on road, 911 is always unique.

2.) The driving of a 944 is a blast, its easy to drive, and makes any level of driver look like a great driver. The 911 is a UNIQUE driving experience that is addictive in nature, but takes a while to master (I still haven't) and will make a great driver look like a terrible driver if he/she has never driven a 911.

3.) Both are good investments meaning the 911 and the 944 turbo(not the NA 944). But the 911 is probably a better investment due to its long history.

4.) Chicks dig 911's

Ok the 4th doesn't count,
just my 1/50th of a dollar,

Von Kiser - great poster.

I currently own a 928 and a 1980 911SC. I owned the 928 3 years prior to owning the 911 and I would agree that driving a 911 is very addictive. The responsiveness of the car, down to the feedback it gives you going in turns, to the pedal configuration, to how fundamental the interior lay out resides all give the driver a great driving experience, and that is really what a car is all about. The other main difference I notice is that the quality build of the 911 is far superior to my 928. I love driving the 928 with the throaty V8, but am continuously working on issues with the doors, windows, electricals, etc.

my opinion only follows. 911's were my desire since i was 5. here are my children.

again, only my opinion. most porsches are beautiful...but just LOOK at the 911. it's classic. 928's are sweet as well.

Badger:

You've heard from the old 911 chauvinists. Now for an entirely different answer.

Why do you even need to ask? You already know that your 951 offers much better performance (yes, including handling), comfort (if that counts for anything) and is substantially more "modern" than any 911 you'd be restricted to buying. Thus, we know that you'd be giving up a lot. And for what in return? Where are the gains? So ask yourself again why you're even thinking of doing such a thing. When you finally discover and admit those things you're trying to repress, you'll be on your way to recovery. No charge for that.

Ok, so I started with a 944 (NA) and went to a 911 myself, but I went *up* in performance by doing so, and I did so in spite of the 911 (an '88) being archaic for it's time. Even the '88 911 reminded me of my '68 VW bug, but on steroids. My answer would be different if you asked about trading for a 993, or maybe even a 964 (almost even in performance, unless you've chipped it up).

Thanks for the replies so far. I appreciate the objective opinions I've gotten so far and it seems like there are more open minds about this subject than one would think.

Jim...I wish I could go all the way up to a 993. There would be no question as to what I'd do there!

Man, someday a 993 will be in my garage...

Sigh...

Might be worth reading this thread as well <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=4&t=001498" target="_blank">951 or 964</a>

Tough question to answer! Looks like you've got a nice example of 944T, and there's alot to recommend them. For me, I like aircooled 911's. There's something about driving a vehicle, with the engine behind you, that's been in continuous development since 1965, that has a direct, long term, racing connection (and spawned parts for the track junkie), and which is also unique. To start on the track, stock, it's excellent, and there's lot's of upgrade capability to go as far as you want, and still be a Porsche 911 (conversions aside). Comparative statistics miss what a 911 is, as the poster says (still think collecting all the Porsche ads through the years would make a great book). As Kevin and Chris suggested, maybe it's time to spend some time with one, see if you get hooked.

Talking

After owning a 1984 944, then a 1986 944 turbo, and now a 1987 911 turbo, I have spent much less money maintaining the 911 turbo. My 944's always needed something and always had a rattle somewere. The 911 is 15 years old, has 47,000 miles on it and feels like new. I feel that the 911's are a much better built car. The 951 is alot of bang for the buck.

I also enjoy driving the 911 on the track more than the 951

Easy. 911 drivers have bigger bratwurst.

Then of course, there is this:
