Cost of paint job for 911
Hi,
I've had my '79 Targa for about 30 years now and it's in need of a facelift. I'm considering renovating it -- paint and interior. I was shocked today when the shop that has it gave me an estimate of $8k for the actual red paint, and $18k for the labor, totaling $26,000+-!! Interior was $8-9k roughly. I'm curious what others have paid for paint jobs and interior restorations. Obviously it depends on how deep they go into taking it apart, etc., but this seems out of the ballpark to me.
thanks in advance.
Mitch

Paint
I was at the bodyshop getting an estimate for my friends boxster. They are pretty high end, I have used them for over 12 years for numerous cars. I asked how much to paint a g series that needs no rust work or major bodywork. He told me 12k to 14k max. I found the price reasonable. He told me the car is small so much less materials are needed. The main portion of the bill comes from taking it apart. Good luck

"I'm Earl Sheib, and for $49.95 I'll paint your car and give you $10 metalwork absolutely free." Well, you're about 60 years too late on that. Re-doing a modern Boxster versus re-doing an early 911 have very little to do with each other, involve quite different skillsets and scopes of work, and typically involve different types of of shops. For an early 911:
For the highest level concours-winning paint job $30,000 and up (depending on a lot of things) with no metal work.
For a totally wonderful #1 paint job, $20,000 with no metal work.
For a typical really good paint job $10,000 to $15,000.
For your local paint shop job maybe $3,000 to $7,000 and poor vision.
For the highest level concours-winning full interior $15,000 plus parts.
For a really good full interior job $8,000 plus parts.

Thanks Earl! I'm cool with a total wonderful #1 paint job. Are you including the paint in that? Restorer told me paint alone is $8k... does that sound right? I assume that's an exact match of the best paint available.

I recently had my 911 painted. I looked at my invoice and see that the paint and supplies were $7,200 (just paint and supplies - nothing else). This was for Glasurit single stage paint. I am sure costs will vary by brand and whether single or two-stage.

San Francisco Bay Area:
$15K Bare Metal no metal work. +2K for Single Stage Glasurit oil based.
$25K+ Bare Metal, Metal Work and Glasurit
Hope this helps
Some of the well known P Car Shops start at $20K+ without any metal work

Interior work
I just ripped the interior out of an 83 SC. New carpets, alcantara headliner, seatbelt planet seatbelts, seals, switches, shifter, GTS Classics seats (still waiting on those), door cards...pretty much everything in the interior. Other than the headliner did all the work myself. About 11k.

I did the interior of mine in 2018. Dash, new seats, carpets, door panels, console delete, no headliner. All of the upholstery work was done by myself. The seats were sourced from classic touring seats.
Cost includes the Wevo shifter, Wevo PSJ, Rennline bits for the dash, doors and floor.
Total materials and parts was about what Rockerchief spent $11 to $12K. With labor I think you would be looking at $16K to $19K.
