Default Is a 1988 3.2 Coupe worth over $30K?

A local dealer, Tim Holt of Holt Motor Sport
(http://www.holtmotorsports.com/inventory_2.html) has a very nice selection of used 3.2 Carreras. He has one particular car that I am interested in, however, the price is $30,900 for a car with 45K miles. Is this price too high? I remember looking at other 1987 3.2 Coupes 5-6 years ago with similar mileage and they were priced at $28K or less back then. Have the prices increased lately for a 3.2 Carrera?

He also has a nice 1989 Coupe with 28K miles and a price of $37K. Doesn't this price seem very high? Can't I get a 1986-88 Turbo with similar miles for this price? What gives?

Yes, those prices are high. Dealers tend to charge a premium, especially for low mileage examples.

And that is a fundatmental buyer's question.

Should I buy a low mileage, premium priced car?

Or should I spend a lot less & get a car to drive. One that I won't feel guilty taking to Blockbuster.

I haven't answered it yet.

I payed top dollars for my '88 Coupe ($22k). I can't see how you could justify a 50% higher price--certainly not because of mileage,as the 3.2. is a very sturdy engine. Look at the ads in Panorama, at the PCA website, or here. You're basically paying $10,000 for a rear window wiper.

You can get a 993 for that kind of money.

Edit: removed Carrera talk.

$22K is not "top dollar" for an '88. Low mileage (assuming condition to match) can have a major impact on market value -- to the person who wants that.

If you're a perfectionist (like me), then go for it. I recently bought a perfect 87' Carrera Targa with 17K miles for $33K.

Make sure you have the car thoroughly checked out. Low mileage doesn't always guarantee that a car was well cared for.

Good Luck!

Those prices are insane. You will lose 10 grand when you drive them off of the lot. Like Jack said, for that dough you can get a 993.

A friend of mine bought a 1988 911 for Tim Holt last year, he spent more than $30K...but it was in the very rare color that he wanted and he was tired of searching the east coast. In his case, he got a great low mileage 911 that he has no problems with. As for getting another type of 911, a 964 or 993 or 996, that wasn't a consideration, it was getting the 911 he had dreamed of...period.

Ken,

While it appears he has some nice low mile 911's for sale, he seems to be high across the board. Interestingly enough he doesn't list prices for the 993's in his inventory. I suspect he will be high on them as well. Take your time and look around.

Jack is spot on, for $37k you can find a real nice 993. Just ask our own John Dunkle

You may lose 10 grand if you sell it after right driving it off the lot. I don't intend to sell mine for a very long time (if ever). True, you could get a 993 for that price, but I'd rather have a mint condition 911 than a mediocre condition 993.

It boils down to:

Do you want . . .

A race car? Lowest price, mileage insignificant because I'm going to track it & modify it anyway.

A sports car? Medium priced, average mileage (80K - 120K) because I'm going to drive it often (or daily).

A collector car? Highest priced, lowest mileage, rarest versions because I'm going to polish it & baby it & drive on sunny Sundays only.

You guys on the west coast are getting spoiled - prices for 911s are lower than eastern markets. $22K for a 1988 Carrera is a fair price for a stock example but will likely need a few things. Start making improvements and prices start getting a bit higher.

A 95' 993 with 36K on the clock just went for $32K on Ebay -- same car was listed on Autotrader for $31K. I would never buy from a dealer -- you pay too much and generally can't talk to the PO nor do you get a complete repair history. I think that's key when you're buying a car like a Porsche or you can count on heavy repair bills down the road.

Default Just Bought mine in Sept 03

Paid 23k for it and LOVE IT! 100k miles and is PERRRFECT! I could care less what "the value" is, I would have paid 28K for the fun and pleasure, not to mention the constant STARES as you drive from others! Go for it!
