I trade on the floor of the Philly exchange these days. Since i've been in my pit for many years I stand in the front row and I have a ledge in front of so I can put my mini lap top down on it. On slow days ( there are many) I surf the web looking and pricing 911's.... Have I missed the occasional good trade cause I was burried in 911's?.... Hell yaa

Just a thought, but everyone seesm to think that just because a dealer has a car that has been gone through, what does that "really" mean? I bought my 85 Carrera for $15K, and it was in great shape, two owner, extremely well maintained, etc., etc.
What I failed to see when purchasing it was the not so obvious:
THE CAR is OVER 15 Years old. Things wear out that you can't see, and like most people who grew up with hot rods, I wanted to upgrade something.
* Tires
* shocks
* torsion bars
* headlights
* oil return tubes
* shift coupler
* alternator
* sway bars
* shifter
* performance upgrades
* a/c issues
* floor mats
and the list goes on and on and on
I personally wouldn't consider spending that much money on a "pristine" example, but just a "good" example for that model year as Bruce Anderson says, as we are addicted to our cars, and going to upgrade it anyway.
If you pay that much for a car, you WILL be doing some or all of the upgrades REGARDLESS. If not, then why are you reading this BBS?
Personally, I don't have a lot of money to burn, so I try to make wise choices. I don't like other people to do the foot work for me - it's just a personal thing.

I sold a low-mile '88 Carrera coupe (black/black, polished 7s & 8s) last Spring for $16,500. Today, that car wouldn't bring $13K in L.A.
There is no sign of economic turnaround here, so if you guys are seeing prices North of $14K elsewhere, get on a plane and come car shopping in Southern California.

Wow, Porsche prices in LA are even lower than Ebay. Didn't think it was possible! Anyone out there have a low mile 88' coupe, black or red that's at least a 7.5 out of ten, for 13K I'll take it.

For what it's worth
After looking for quite some time, I found and purchased a Diamond Blue 88 Targa with 57K on it for $23K three years ago. It now has 86.5K miles on it. No leaks, no smoke at start up, and a blast to drive. It was on a dealers show room with a sold sign on it but it "reached out to me" (long story). Moral is - if you find one that you like, (and do the appropriate checks) ........
It would take alot more than $23K to get me to sell it.

86NOH2O, I'll let you know what I find. 7.5 out of 10 should be a no-brainer.
Biotron: I realize that talking raw numbers sounds cold. If the car 'grabs you in the gut', it's worth what you need to pay for it. Most of us don't pay cash and we need some inspiration every month when we write a check. I'd never mock anyone for paying 20% over market for the exact car they lust for.

Older cars in Indiana after a certain year are exempt from miles.
There is good auto dealers out there , the key is finding a good mechanic to check out this car. A mechanic that has no connections with the dealer that you are interested in.

I have been searching for a 993 for quite sometime now and I can tell you that any 993 in the low to mid $30's IS A PIECE OF CRAP!!! PERIOD.
When I was in Los Angeles this summer I looked at about 5 of them and was astonished at the condition... Replacement fenders, chrome wheels that were curbed terribly, paintwork that looked like it was performed by Ray Charles, etc., etc., etc.
My point being that the 993's that are priced high(in your opinions) reflect the price in the overall condition.

I work for Tim Holt (and have for 4 years now..). Tim has sold something like 2,500 911's.
I'd like to respond to all the positive posts and say "Thank You" from Tim and I.
We think the forum is a great thing but a first time, inexperienced buyer can really leave confused.
We buy THE BEST, privately owned, air-cooled cars we can and sell all of them usually pretty close to our asking price.
Those people in our business know the supplyof nice 911's is equal to about 15% of the cars out there for sale.
The 85% "pool" of cars found by the buyer's who use the "model year - price formula" get, well, an average car - IF THEY'RE LUCKY!
The yr/price formula works well for a Ford Taurus, but not an air-cooled 911 - not a special condition car.
This year we've sold, as an example, a 95' Cpe for $33K and a 95' Cpe for $49K - Both buyer's were VERY satisfied. We sold an 89' Cpe (3.2) for $22K and an 89' for $39K
Basically the price = supply / demand theory needs to be modified for a 911 purchase. The supply, as we know, is limited much more than the public realizes. The demand is, and always has been, very good. The supply of "what" however? . Does the market know an all original perfect 95' (we have several now) from an average, re-painted DE track car with a $300 detail??? The answer is: only when you tell them the price! A price-shopper is his / her own worst enemy when buying a sportscar like a 911 Carrera. Try considering condition, originality, reputation of seller, miles, warranties, colors, options, and MOST IMPORTANTLY, the available of comparable cars, then buy.
