I bought an 89' silver Carrera cab last summer for $25k. the car has 68k and is in excellent condition - everything works, nothing needs repaired. i felt like i paid what the car was worth.

If you paid over $30K for a Carrera you are a sucker! If it is low miles and perfect, so what are you gonna do, just look at it. It is simple fact, 964s are better cars than Carraras, and 993s are better than 964s, just drive em, or just point one by.

These cars are meant to drive hard. If you don't then, you sure ain't getting your money's worth.

Default "the best"

"The best" is a very subjective phrase. I think you'll find many many answers to what people think are the best 911's. Personally I have owned several 993's many 964's including a Speedster and an RS America as well as many 3.2 Carrer's and an 89 turbo. I liked all of them for one reaosn or another and I dirve all of them differently. There is a huge contingent of people that like the 3.2 Carrers's and the SC's "the best". Its a personal thing just the same way you drive is a personal thing. Look at how active the 911 board is here and on Pelican and you'll see how many people love the 3.2 Carrera and 3.0 SC's and the long nose 911 and see which they think is the "best". I like Jack's car the best and I've never owned a long nose.

Trader220:

Thanks for the info and offer. I have dealt with Tim on several occasions and always found him to be a nice guy. At that time, his prices were high, but full retail. He also worked with me on the price. $2K was about the most he was willing to take off. I could probably have gotten more if I tried, but he helped me out so why bother. It appears that nice low mileage 3.2 Carreras have gone up during the past few years.

Alan:

Let's just say I respectfully disagree with your post. In fact, it's one of the most ignorant statements I've read on this board. I don't know why I'm dignifying this, but....

First, newer doesn't mean better. Is the 964 "better" than a 1973 Carrera RS too? If airbags and A/C make a better sports car, then I guess so. (Not to take anything away from 964 fans, it's only an example.)

Secondly, people derive pleasure in different ways Alan. Racing turns some on, concours for others, while some just want a weekend driver. "Money's worth" is both subjective and personal. Anyway, $30k is a lot to some, but very little to others...like the one who buys that "better" 996 Cabriolet with full leather and the wood package for $100k plus. To each his own.

Sean -- well said.

FWIW, I think using eBay prices to assess the market is very misleading. A '95 993 with 34K miles sold for $32K... this is largely meaningless. We know NOTHING about the condition of the car beyond what was said in the ad. As any of us who has ever shopped for a used car knows, the seller's description often has NOTHING to do with the truth. That 993 might be beautiful, it might be a mess, it might be anywhere in between. Without knowing the real details -- about the car and the seller's need to sell -- it tells us little or nothing about the market.

For what it is worth, I just bought a 1987 Carrara coupe with 17,000 miles, tail, sunroof, leather, and more for less than 24k in perfect condition with all records thanks to this web site and a member, Michael Hunt of Desert BMW. Great people to do business with.

I looked for six months for a low milage G-50 coupe. There are plenty of great cars out there for less money. Thank you Rennlist!!!!!!!!!!

Be careful on low mileage porsche's , its really easy to swape out odometers.
I have seen cars that looked like 10k miles but had over 100k.

I did like the 25th , i had one once.

I paid about 24k , 5 -6 years ago.

Good luck

If you have records and carfax, you can check to see if the mileage stated really looks true.

The odometer trick might be why you can buy a 30k mile "like new" 993 for 25K on Ebay. Ha

I'd pay 30K for a "special" to me 88'. If there are no others like it for sale it's what the market will bear. I know my next car will be a low mile red/tan 930. I'm guessing right now I will pay a premium.

I had a Perfect '88 coupe w/ 114k on the clock that I sold for 17. I'm sure I could have sold it for a little more if I held out. You can get a real low milage 3.2 Carrera for around 25K. You would be overpaying at over 30K.

Some said you can get a 964 or 993 for that price, but they arent the same car, nor are they better, just different. Keep looking, you will find one!

In November, 2002, I paid more than $25k for my 67k mile '89 coupe for several reasons:

1. Shopping for a 911 was fun . . . for a while.

2. Even at a Jack$on per hour, my time was adding up to real money. So do PPIs, plane tickets, fuel and food for road trips, etc.

3. My productivity at work was suffering.

4. Not only is the buying decision emotional, there are more ratty 911s than clean ones, and looking at them is emotionally draining.

5. On top of that, I didn't want a red or white car, and apparently those were my choices. Given a choice of colors, I would have put stone gray on the short list. I admit that this was a big factor in my decision.

Soon after I bought my car, the bottom seemed to fall out of the 911 market and I felt foolish for spending so much. But you'll hear from lots of owners "Oh, only a flush idiot would spend more than $2X,000 on a G50 Carrera," or "You can buy nice low-mileage Carreras all day long for $5k less than that dreamer wants." When it comes down to looking at the cars, however, there really aren't that many good ones available. People like these cars and don't want to sell them for many of the reasons posters have mentioned including, most notably, the arguable "improvements" in the later models.

AIC, Holt, and others like them perform a valuable service. They find, prepare, and display in one location extremely nice 911s. At the end of the day, it's just a car. If you like one you see and can afford it, buy it.

Wait, I didn't really mean that. It's not just a car, and buyer's remorse fades with the miles.

How true. I work out of a home office so I'm wired to the Internet and car search & research all day. When I'm out, I travel the Southeast extensively and lately I've been planning car viewings around my trips.

Ha Ha Ha.

I have to agree with that too and was one of the motivators in me buying my car the week before Christmas...
