Question Track video and data synch options

I am a complete novice when it comes to track data and video synchronization.
I use traqmate and HD camcorder that does not synch with traqmate. My question is what options do we have as far as software goes to synch traqmate data to video. I remember seeing some fancy software where you can change the look of the data display to match the instrument panel of your car ... or and I stuck with the vanilla flavor Traqstudio software?

One software that seems to work with all kinds of data acquisition device is track vision. Anyone with track vision experience compare with Traqstudio? Not cheap ... $295 ouch

I use trackvision. It's $195 without the watermark. You can customize the dashes pretty easily. I hacked the IQ3 dash to make an AIM one in about 4hrs.

if i have to use my brain, it's too hard to use.
i have to push more than one button on my trackmate, result : SOLD
aim was no better, result: SOLD
downloading these things with a long wire or lap top on top of cars roof scratching paint off or try to get in the car with full cage and get bruised everywhere.... i downloaded it ONCE in the whole year i had it.... you get the pix.
this is fun, NOT work.

Yeah, these data loggers are very hard to use and they are not iphone easy. I had one heck of a time tapping into the DME just to get RPM signals. Software to synch data and video are worst. I just spend an hour trying to make dashwear work and the whole thing froze on me. I will likely try traqstudio software next

I just got the SmartyCam from Andrie at http://www.prima-racing.com/
Excellent and I'd say almost completely foolproof.

http://www.smartycam.com

I haven't had it at the track yet, so all I can say for now is I checked out the market and it was a step ahead of anything the vendors were saying they'd have in the near future. The newest Traqmate (which does do video sync) seems pretty good too. I like the fact the SmartyCam is able to go on a bike (some of these units can handle lean angles and get confused about accelerometer data.)

It also has the Porsche CAN pickup bridge.

And AiM knows what they're doing with the very high-end gear, so this all-in-one data and video unit can expand to analog interfaces, digital dash, steering wheel, etc.:

Of everything I saw RaceKeeper was the best (SavyBoy uses it, as does Porsche's driving school, PSDS, as do a couple of dozen of the elite driving schools and training companies. If I was a little more serious and driving the track more frequently, I would have gone with RK (even though I know Savy has had troubles with some software glitches and that's not okay.) But I know the RK people pretty well and I'm confident their late model Porsche-specific solution is the best.

That reminds me they have a pretty cool "heads-up" display for the iPhone -- it uses Bluetooth and provides things like a shift light and lap/segment time.

Been using a SmartyCam since last year, and it's about as easy as it gets. It gives you video overlaid with speed, lateral G's, and a track map. If you have an Aim data system as well, you can select any of the data it provides, or data available via CAN. The big benefit of the SmartyCam is that the data overlay is recorded in real-time with the video, so you don't have to do post-processing on your computer to sync data with the video and/or create the overlay.

I've also got a Traqmate and ChaseCam system in a different car, and with the new Traqstudio software it's a *fairly* fool-proof setup :-). But not as easy as the SmartyCam.

i am sure AiM knows what they are doing. but i dont know what i am doing :-)

Adam

Thanks for the heads up on smartycam. Looks super nice. I don't think the video is in HD ... I only found 480p on YouTube and it's pretty grainy

Hey Mooty!!

That's the nice thing about the SmartyCam....you don't have to know anything. Charge up the battery, mount it, and go. The first time you go to a particular track you'll need to hit one button on the unit to tell it where the lap starts on the track....that's it. You get your video, and you get on-screen speed, lap time, lap count, etc.
