Asking in a 718 forum might not get a random sample.

I have a 718 Spyder and more than one 911. If I could only have one, I'd keep a 911 over the Spyder unless I wanted a convertible. The Spyder is great, and is the best convertible made, and best convertible Porsche probably ever. That said, I like the 911 more. If I had 2 Porsches, then the Spyder would probably be one of them, but with one, I'd take 911 coupe, and the 992 GTS is a great version.

Longer term, my bet is that you will have more than one Porsche once the family is settled. In that case, you might think about what a 2-Porsche garage would be, and keep the Spyder if it is in that optimal garage. If 992 GTS and 718 Spyder is what you'd want to own in 5 years, then keep them, because the cost and hassle of swapping is too high. If you only see one Porsche for the next several years, bye-bye Spyder. My 2c.

Great perspective. I think the Spyder and 992 GTS 2-car setup compliments eachother very well. Money aside, I would love to keep both. I think where my decision lies is whether I feel like keeping both is the right financial decision. (Perhaps this is the wrong forum for financial advice)

Definitely wrong forum for Porsche financial advice. When I got my 997gt2rs in 2012 the car was worth more than I was and ironically sold it in 2015 when I had my son.

What does the wife drive?
Do you really want to be (or be seen) hauling the baby around in a 992? I honestly don’t think that’s a good look
Maybe try to discuss your life changes with your SA and get a Macan or Cayenne instead when your car arrives in June…. then keep the Spyder as your “escape from reality” vehicle.

the wife and I share a Tesla Model Y Performance.

my thoughts is if my wife needs to go somewhere with the Tesla, I’d at least have the option to transport the baby in a 911, whereas I can’t do this with the Spyder. This scenario is less common, but still nice to have the option.

i’ve only drove a 992 base for about 10 min. My hopes was that the 992 GTS is just as fun as the Spyder and a little bit more practical and comfortable for the family

You don't have to sell your cars just because you have kids. I have a 6 and a 5 year old and 6 cars, 4 of which are two seaters that get about 500 miles per year. Unless you need the money for diapers just fill up the garage in a financially responsible manner.

I have a 991 and my son rides in it all the time (usually in the front seat, he’s 5, he loves it). And now he’s super into cars to the point where last week he told me “dada! A 930!” While we were out.

I feel like I’m doing financially okay compared to my peers in the early-mid 30 age group, though I wonder how much opportunity cost am I missing out on by having two 6 figure cars sitting in the garage. I grew up with immigrant parents, so saving money and being frugal is engrained in me..

Quick math tells me with a 5.5% hysa, I’d be earning an extra $7k+ per year passively vs -$2500 a year per year from insurance and registration and possibly more from depreciation.

maybe one way to frame it is the Spyder worth $10,000 per year of fun?

Don’t forget that the Spyder will most likely hold its value and I really feel that it will actually increase in value down the road… Not too many investments are as fun a Spyder

The concept is so foreign to me that I though that was a joke. I had a 911 as my only car for the first 2 years of my son's life, and had a car seat in the back. Not even sure what "not a good look" means in this context. Are you going to collect food stamps in the car?

I'm in a somewhat similar boat as you, although with a 718 GT4 and a 3 and a half year old.
When I bought the GT4 6 months ago, my first words to ym wife were I'm never selling this thing and I've had a lot of fun with it, putting 5k miles on it, mostly on the twisties. My little one absolutely loves it.
The reason I'm going for a 992 GTS is because it has 4 seats and we can go together as a family. I see more use getting out of the 992 as opposed to the GT4, which is primarily a weekend car or occasional day car pick up and drop offs.
I've somewhat accepted the experience in the 992 won't be as good as the GT4, but if it's 80% there, I'll be happy.

Edit: I'll also add whilst different cars, I had a M2 for the first 10 months of my son's life and we did a three week road trip in it from London to Florence in Italy via Germany, Switzerland and Austria. We had an absolute blast, including the giggling little one on some of the Alpine passes. We'll cherish those memories for a very long time and I'm hoping to create something similar with a 911.

Looks like you barely drove the Spyder and only drove a base 911 for a few minutes before ordering a GTS? Too late now but in your situation, maybe keeping the Spyder and ordering another more livable Porsche like a Cayenne S or GTS might have been more practical for your young family? Anyway, good luck with the GTS. They hold their value so even if it doesn’t work out, you can get something else without a substantial financial penalty. The allure of the 911 is very strong being Porsche’s halo car and all so it is good to get it out of your system. See what the fuss is all about.

When I was young, I was so busy that I barely had time to drive the one sports car that I always owned. Even now in my 60s, other things occupy my time and besides, seasonal living in two places makes it very difficult to commit my time to my Boxster or my previous 911. Time, there is never enough of it for me at least even for my one sports car.
