Default To sell the 718 Spyder or to keep

I had my first child a week ago and am contemplating selling the Spyder. I have a 992 GTS arriving in June which I think will get more usage. It doesn’t seem financially responsible to keep both cars, though I do have the option to keep both. (The wife approves)

Has anyone owned a 992 and a 718 GT4/Spyder? Will I regret it I sold my Spyder?

A GTS is just a 911. A Spyder is something special. I know the car I’d keep.

I have. I sold the Spyder after a couple of months. I think a 911 is a preferred experience. Keep both for a bit then decide.

Your call but if you dont need the money, think you will want it later, and its not hurting anything by keeping it why not keep it. My experience with having a kid was it was 2 years before life was back to normal ish, although it's definitely permanently changed. I barely did anything car related in that time but what I liked before didn't change what I liked after. If it makes you feel any better I personally have 2 cars I never really drive, but they're not hurting anything and when I do drive them I really like them. You're also not using that 911 for anything family related while your kid is in a reverse facing car seat and even afterwards probably not until 5+ when a booster seat is ok to use. I briefly thought a 992 would be a smarter choice with a kid until I realized realistically zero family things were happening in either car so I just went with the 2 seater.

If you don't really care about the car that much and probably will sell it eventually anyway now is probably the bset time to sell it.

Keep both unless you're really feeling the crunch. Even then I'd get rid of the 992 first.

Probably helps to add that I’ve owned every iteration of Boxsters/Caymans leading up to the 718 Spyder. This will be my first 911 so there definitely is a curiosity factor.

Will you have time to drive both cars? If not then I would the sell the one that will collect dust in the garage. With a child, the 911 will certainly see more usage as you say. If you are into collecting cars, then I would keep both.

If you love both, keep both.
1 child is relatively "easy" with two parents... ask me how I know
You're in the initial tiring phase with a newborn - don't make knee jerk decisions... just let it ride out a while and you'll come to the decision...
My personal opinion is that I personally think the Spyder is a more special vehicle to own as a sunny weekend toy... but only you can decide that one for yourself.

Congrats on the new arrival (the baby - the "human" baby)

are a NA and convertible lover and prefer smaller compact cars?

if so then Spyder over 992 GTS coupe any day

if you don't care that much about NA, vert or size then 992

They are going to keep making 911’s with the 992.2 around the corner. No more NA Spyders once the RS version ends production. If I had to keep one, it would be the Spyder. If you can afford to keep both, it would be easier to make your decision with both at your disposal.

Congratulations on the child!

What I tell people about my 981 Spyder is that it’s not possible to have *more* fun in another car than in Spyder. Different fun, yes; as much fun; yes. But not more. The Spyder exudes a 100% sports car experience. I also have Boxster GTS 4.0 (pdk) and 991.2 (7spd). Spyder RS is arriving in within a week to the dealer.

The 911 in 992 guise (especially GTS variant) is about the best overall car there is. The experience is wonderful. Is the experience 100% sports car? I don’t think so. That’s not meant to detract from 992; it’s a superb automobile that can do what just about any 100% sports car can do (and more), with some minor limitations.

The Spyder offers one of the most unique experiences on the road, and I think that experience at its peak is way more fun than the experience of a 992 GTS at its peak. Deciding on one or the other is a very difficult choice; and if the wife approves and the finances do too, then absolutely you should have both. It’s not irresponsible; it’s resisting the possibility of making a mistake by jettisoning a fine work of art that will never ever be produced again in that form factor, with that engine, at that curb weight.

Keep it, and then decide. I do not doubt you’d regret selling it. Just because you don’t use it often doesn’t mean it’s a shame to keep it. I have only 9k miles on my Spyder after 8.5 years, and 4k of those were put on in the last two years. I felt like I drove the Spyder plenty, but sparingly enough to regard it as a special vehicle for special driving days.

Good luck.

I have a 2020 718 Spyder and a 2022 992 GTS. They are very different vehicles. The Spyder is magic. It does everything better than the 992. Except the Spyder is loud and smaller inside. The 992 is great for long road trips. I think it all depends on what you will be doing with the car. If it will just be a sports car that you will typically drive alone, there is no comparison IMO. The steering, connection to the road, the car's reaction to your input, the shifter, the accelerator mapping, the pedal position, the simplicity of the controls, are all significantly better in the Spyder. However, it's a raw, engaging sports car. If you're looking for a road trip car and if you plan on putting your child in it, then it will have to be the 992. The 992 is still great, but IMO it is a GT. Even.in GTS manual trim like mine, the 992 is a GT if the Spyder is the benchmark. If status is important, then it will be the 992. Everyone recognizes and fawns over the 992. The 718 is a Boxster/Cayman which the ignorant masses know as the car for the wannabes who can't afford a 911. But a car is a personal expression. The 992 is elegant and gorgeous. It has grace, poise and presence. The Spyder looks like it's dying to snap its leash and break the law. When I drive the Spyder, I feel that I can do anything and the car will just do exactly what I want. I can sense how close to the limit my tires are with my finger tips. There is no slop anywhere in the steering. Heel toeing is comically easy in the Spyder. The 6 speed is also magic. If you're a manual driver, then I'd tell you to absolutely stay with the 718. The 7 speed is just stupid and should not exist IMO.

If you can keep both, keep both. For a short period of time I had a 991.2 Targa 4S and a 718 Spyder. I got laid off in January so it didn’t make much sense to keep both at that point.

For daily driving, the Targa was my go to. But since I wasn’t daily driving it anymore, and I’m trying not to go back to a 9-5, and I enjoyed the pure driving experience of the Spyder better, I sold the Targa.
